Has anyone had any experience with the Grizzly precision granite plate? I am thinking of getting one 9"x12" to use for sanding my handle materials flat on the scale side. Are these any good?

Yes I use a 9" by 12" granite for a flat surface. They are not expensive in the smaller sizes but go up tremendously in big slabs. Very handy for knife making. Grizzly is a good brand.

I bought two of em from Harbor Freight a couple three years ago. Wouldn't wanna try to sand anything flat without em.

Thanks for the go ahead. Guess I will have to order one when I get some money, lol. The piece itself is fairly cheap, but I bet shipping will be a real bitch. A 9x12x2 piece of granite must weigh a ton. I had problems trying to sand the scales on a 1" grinder for a kit I was making, never did get them flat.

Anyway I am really getting my shop set up to start making some knives. Today I picked up a Sears belt 2x42 grinder while it was on sale. Last month I bought a 12" drill press. I guess all I need now is some steel to start grinding. I have two projects sort of in the works for now. I am almost done with a small talonite knife from the talonite sample I got. I also ordered a GX6 from KnifeKits.com and will be putting it together with MOP scales and damascus bolsters. After these are done I am planning to start grinding my own.

Thanks again.

That's why many of us like Harbor Freight. They pay shipping on any order of $50.00 or more.:D

Erik,
I don't know where you live but I was able to pick one up locally at one of the tool suppliers (Wholesale Tools) for about 30 bucks. I didn't have to worry shipping. Possibly you could find the same thing in your area.

Go to your local flooring professional and get one of his left over marble or granite tiles (usually for free if you ask right). Just get the polished finished kind and pick a cool color. I've got four in different sizes from 9"x9" up to 18"x18" and in colors from creamy tan to beautiful dark forest green swirl. Made the guy a blacksmith patch knife because he was so generous. He's bought three high end knives from me since then. You guys need to get out more and not always to the "tool (toy) store" :)

so, exactly how do you use a granite plate? just glue different grit sandpapers on them and hand sand?

just go to your nearest headstone maker he should have
pieces you can use or someone that makes granite counter tops
tables ecct

terry just use masking tape to tape the paper on..
I like a square sharp corner to fold the paper down
you can sand part of a guard and true it up
that way at the same time.:)

I just use a piece of glass. The glass I've seen has been dead flat, as measured by my eye with a machinest's square. Sometimes I use the glass glued to a piece of wood to sand by hand or glue a piece of paper to the glass and move the item I'm working on.
I do have a piece of granite that I got from a stone mason but I only use it for holding a blade flat to mark center lines.
Comments?

Erik:

I ordered the 9 x 12 x 3 from Grizzly for $19.95 and the shipping is just $5.95, quite the bargain for a 40 pound item. I don't know how they ship for so cheap, but they do. Take care.

i use a 9x12 from grizzly for flattening all kinds of stuff...i got a can of that 3M spray adhesive, spray down a couple spots and stick an 8x11 sheet of sandpaper down on it...when it's time to switch, i pull it right off, neatly, and stick on another one...

or use a few dollops of rubber cement...should work just as well...although it'll take longer to dry...

idahohiker,

When did you order your's? I just got their 2004 catalog, and it says that shipping for it is $35. I checked the website, and it said $5.95. I sent them an email to check, but I am still curious as to when you got such a great deal on shipping from them.

Mike,

I checked Harbor Freight, but they don't seem to have any right now, or at least I can't find them. Besides, if I can get shipping for $5.95 from Grizzly, and only pay $20 for the plate that is a good enough deal for me.

I agree!:D

Dan beat me to it! I was going to suggest going to your local tombstone shop and getting a piece. Another thing, they aren't affected by weather, so they are used for a true instrument table. I have a table entirely made of 3, 3" thick slabs,35"X24". Two slabs are the legs, the third is the top. It is held together by its weight and copper drop in pins. I had 6 of the tables and spread them out amoung friends. I had a lot invested in the instrument tables, about 10 bucks total(US gov. auction). They work great for a leather tooling table, also.I beleive the next ones will be for sale on an online auction.

Gotta loves this forum...I've been looking all over for some Granite, never thought of granite for flooring. Bought my house from a mason that left stacks of granite tiles for floors and counters behind the shed, probably a hundred 12 X 12 inch tiles! Duh, under my nose the whole time.

Anyone in my area is more than welcome to come over and help themselves!

I bought mine about 3 months ago or so. Hope you can get the great shipping deal like I did.

Granite 'comparison blocks' come in different standards so far as flatness is concerned. A block of 2 ten thousands flatness, corner to corner, in the size you mention - 9 X 12 - is a bargain from some sources, such as Enco from whence I got mine.

I use my block to check for flatness instead of placing a sanding paper upon it and using it as a sanding block. It also is invaluable, to me, for using it as a flat surface when scribing taper lines on a blade blank and for checking for tang warp after heat treating. I would not want to be without a granite comparison block and I sometimes even use it as a weight.

I have been looking for one for a long time. I have a brown and sharpe height gage I bought at an auction that has been begging for a plate for a long time. Thought that would be handy for scribing "grind to" lines. I watched a big brown and sharpe inspection grade go for $40 at an auction not long ago. I had just bought a complete taig lathe outfit for $125 before it sold and couldn't afford it then. Still bummed.

But anyway, that is such a sweet deal with the shipping that grizzly had that I had to jump on it. I also bought the G9849 Magnetic Base/Dial Indicator Combo - President's Special for $19.95. It only added $1 for shipping! Both items I have been looking around a while and this is cheaper than I can get them any where else. I used to think grizzly was higher than every where else but not this time. I just spent $46.85 total for the 9x12x3 two ledge plate and the indicator and base.
