I was wondering if I’m the only person that can’t seem to get on line to the dealers of Great eastern cutlery no matter how hard I try because I am elderly I have a hard time figuring out the computers but I’m also a collector of pocket knives and have been for years occasionally I’ve been lucky enough to to buy some from of these dealers in some of them are truly good dealers today the Barlow came out or was released and I’ve seen prices as low as $78 but I also see them now on eBay for his highest $300 and I think the reason that they can go up to $300 it’s just that great eastern cutlery doesn’t make enough knives of one kind to suit the collectors seems that maybe if they could come up with a way that we could order a Knife from great eastern cutlery and make that many knives as they have orders that would create a new job for somebody that needs a job in that area taking orders and ship in pocket knives and everybody would be happy and they wouldn’t have to make an over abundance of these particular pocket knives because we only have a week to call in an order that particular pocket knife. And then we wouldn’t have to buy these pocket knives at a 300 percent or more inflated price. Hector

Though it can be argued that GEC knives have always been difficult to acquire, that hasn't necessarily been the case until rather recently - I'd say within the last year or so. If you are just now getting into what GEC has to offer, you couldn't have picked a worse time. The effects of the pandemic, the limited workforce, the soaring demand, and the already small-business nature of GEC's factory - all of these are factors that have come to a rather painful head.

I've included some links for your perusal below - lots of discussion there to meander through and absorb. My advice is to be patient and let the factory and its dealer network get things sorted. When the dust settles, GEC will hopefully still be making knives, the scrupulous dealers will still be doing business, and the rest will have been taken out with the rubbish.

  1. Thoughts on authorized dealers raising GEC prices above the minimum sale price.
  2. Another thread on the vagaries of buying a GEC knife
  3. How should Collector Knives sell GEC SFO's
  4. GEC Value

I actually have 14 great eastern country knives that I bought in the past I’ve been buying for quite a few years I’ve been lucky enough to buy some lately at a lower price because my wife is better at buying on the computer than I am but in the past I did pay way too much for some of these before I knew better but I love great eastern cutlery knives that are the best knives in my opinion money can buy. Hector

I'm younger, and computer savvy, but have also missed every TC Barlow drop, Sadly.

The email notification comes when I am working,

I don't get live updates for email receipt because my email address receives high volumes.

A few years ago (2016) I thought I would buy a GEC knife. I wasn’t too concerned with the exact model, any stockman or jack pattern would do. Over a period of several months I tried several dealers and EBay and everyone I was interested in was out of stock so I finally put that behind me and gave up on GEC, not worth the trouble.

Low supply and high demand coupled with flippers/scalpers means hard to get at retail pricing. Popular patterns are sold out about as quickly as they're released for sale.
I believe they do pre-orders for the "club" knives they make, so I wonder if they'd ever do a public pre-order?

Yeah its ridiculous. Scalpers and flippers get the ones that the hardcore collectors dont snatch up and it really sucks. Its made even worse since GEC only makes a tiny amount of knives to keep the collector market happy.

I'm glad that I acquired several GEC Knives in the past. I doubt I will ever enter the frenzy that is associated with attempting to purchase one now.

They could expand their production to fix this but they don’t because it keeps demand sky high. I’ve given up on buying anymore GEC. They pander to collectors like no other brand I know of. Near impossible to find the model you want, most of us have to sift through what’s left after the collectors buy 3 of each knife 2 seconds after it drops.

I’m over it now. I won’t be looking anymore!

After three attempts though one supposed credible dealer on two different knives and sending email signup and I received two email verification notification. The last one they never bothered to reply . I checked frequently on their site and then in a short 5 minutes they went from coming soon to sold out. I then went to the bay and sure enough five minutes later there was six or seven at almost double the price. I’m not playing that game and I’m not doing anymore business with that dealer and he won’t be getting any of my money or referrals.

I really enjoy my GECs and have been able to pick up some nice ones over the years.

In the current state of flippers and scrambles I decided to take a step back until production numbers go up and they are easier to obtain.

I found myself wasting way to much time on forums, emails and dealer’s websites trying to get the recent drops. It has become stressful instead of an enjoyable hobby.

Frankly it has been having me take a look at other knife companies again.

Yes there are other knife makers that make very good knives who can actually make them in stainless steal. Yes GEC knives are very fine knives but for the price they’re going for now they aren’t that good. I can get a great USA made knife in upgrade stainless for under $140 so that’s what I value.

I stopped being interested in them because their knives are so hard to get and they seldom use stainless. I have two of their knives and that's probably all I'll ever own.
