I had never heard of Warren Osborne before when I asked for a suggestion from a knife store and the guy said I carry a 940; great knife. I loved the look of the knife but I just couldn't justify the price; especially when I could get a 950 Rift for less (mo blade, less $$$). I ordered a Rift and a Griptilian and both were a bit big and thick for EDC stuff; especially at work in khakis. Finally decided to pony up and buy a 940. I would love to tell you that it was love at first site and it kinda was but it definitely wasn't. I really dug the way it looked but man I hated the feel of that handle. So much so that I immediately put it up for sale. Woke up this morning and handled the knife for most of the morning and the feeling of the handle has grown on me.

In theory I'm drawn to BIG knives; I'm a big guy with big hands. In practice however, I like a long/slim knife. I discovered recently that I really dig Case's Slimline trapper due to it having a long handle and a slim/lightweight design. Turns out the same is true with a modern folder. The 940 is really all I need in an EDC and if I need something more heavy duty I probably just need to use a fixed blade.

A few requests for Benchmade:
Would love to see additional handle colors. Green is sexy though.
Would love to see a lower cost version (154CM, D2, or whatever steel) with a less expensive handle.
Please don't stop making this knife! :)

To this day the 940 is still my favorite Benchmade and a great EDC. My first one was in August 2005 with 154CM. Still have it as you'll see below. Really looking forward to the killer 940-1 with S90V & CF.

Mine (including the sibling 943) from top to bottom:

  1. 940SBK (154CM, purple anodized titanium backspacer)
  2. 940BK (154CM, NRA, gray handle, blue anodized titanium backspacer, 392 of 500)
  3. 940SBK (S30V, black handle, silver anodized titanium backspacer, 242 of 300)
  4. 940 (S30V, purple anodized titanium backspacer)
  5. 943 (S30V, blue anodized titanium backspacer)

Great collection my friend!

I really love the 950 Rift but it's little brother is making me reconsider it. All the blade I need in the 940 in a lightweight comfortable package that will go with jeans or khakis for work. Really dig it!

Back in the day I believe they already did the different scale colors and 154cm thing so I don't see much hope in them going back to that. It's a great knife no doubt.

Probably not but it would be a nice option, I think. I actually thought my knife had 154cm due to a youtube review of an older 940 until I got it.

Love my 950 Rift, but it's something I carry at work.
The 940 was my favourite general EDC Benchmade, until I got the 943.
I wouldn't part with any of them... well, actually I would part with the 940 but only to fund a 940-1.

Yes, definitely a hall of fame blade. Please cast your vote for 940 here before Tuesday (4/8/2014)

It really can't go wrong with 940 or 950, even 810, if you work in place that is needed.

I really like 940 as corporate environment EDC. (or Work Day Carry). 950 to me is Non Work Day carry, as many people at the office would not like large G10 handled knife.

Should not have clicked on this thread. I'm missing all the ones that I owned but traded away. I want a new one even more after seeing all these pics!

I have always liked the 940 especially for office work edc and liked it all the more with the custom g10 handle. Always ends up in my pocket most of the time...

Voted yesterday!

The 940 is a deceptively small but practical folder. It starts with that narrow, thin and slim profile packing a 3.4" blade. The under 3 ounces weight is a big attribute. The upcoming 940-1, with the CF handle and S90V, makes it an almost perfect package both aesthetically and with the great steel.

I only own 2 Benchmades, and the 940 is one I bought here on the Exchange. It is a joy to use and has elevated itself into one of my top 5 knives. I see it always as one of my supplemental edc beauties.

940 is the best EDC in the BM line. I have multiples and has used/abused a few of them. Had a hurricane a few years back that the 940 was primary workhorse knife wise. It ate it up and spit it out. Can't beat the package the 940 brings.

I will always have at least one.

Good to know they stand up well to hard use. I just ordered a 943 to keep my 940 company.
