I'm actually not a huge fan of live music. I like live when I am at the concert. When I sit down at the comfort of my own home, I want to hear polished studio music.
However, there are a few live albums out there that really capture the spirit of the band. Just like there are some bands who should never release live albums because they just sound awful (like Smashing Pumpkins).
My all time favorite live metal/hard rock album is definitely:
Blue Oyster Cult-- Extraterrestrial Live
There are tracks on this album that are better than their studio counterparts. Amazing clarity of recording, Eric Bloom's vocals and wonderfully manic stage persona alongside Buck Dharma's ridiculously great guitar solos, and a superb selection of 70s fan favorites make this an all time classic album-- live or not.
I don't even have a close second.
