Hey since there isn't really a lighter sub-forum I was wondering if you guys have ever made your own Zippo Fluid. I was looking at some stuff and people said you could use Napatha as fuel but thats not why i'm here. I was wondering if you could take copper nitrate or something and add it to the fluid/ soak the wick in it and would cause the flame to turn green. If you already know how to do this it would be great if you could share your secret :D

Oh god chemistry....why do you haunt me?

Boric acid + Zippo Fuel = Green Flame

But wait theres more...Boric acid is a solid so your going to need to make borate ester with alcohol.

If I remember correctly you need a strong acid for the catalyst (for the esterification-dohingy) I can't remember if we used Sulfuric or Phosphoric.

Needless to say it takes some work but you get the green flame, just bear in mind that there will be some residual left over when using this so if your doing bong hits with the green flame its going to taste bad....er...um...Or at least that what CM told me :p

EDIT:
http://chemistry.about.com/od/funfireprojects/a/greenfire.htm I was pretty damn close for running off memory, this link just gives a really easy way to do it and you could mix that stuff with zippo fuel to get a green flame...Just note where the boric acid is coming from and it gives you a idea on if the stuff is good for you or not. Also IIRC ammonium chloride will also make for a green flame, same with copper.

I've had this happen with normal Zippo fuel.
I just happened to trim the wick to a length that caused the air/fuel mixture burned green.
Caught a lot of attention until the wick had to be trimmed again...

Well you dont take bong rips with a Zippo to begin with! Geez!

My comment was referring to ALL colored flames, that includes "jet" lighters which are fairly popular I'd assume. The additives are not only harmful if inhaled (over time accumulation, not immediately) but will also cause the flavor to go bad on cigars, cigs, and other smoke-ables.

Learned the hard way when having nothing else to light a cigar with we used a "purple" flame jet lighter.

I don't use it to smoke actually I use my Zippo to dick around and do tricks that's why I want to make it have a green flame cause i'm not going to be smoking anything with it anyway and I think it would look sick.

It should work but you'd have to make a solution of whatever additive, Calcium, Copper Barium, depending on which color you want, most salts will go solute in water but I'm not sure about lighter fluid, fireworks deal primarily in solids as the salts can be unstable if not mixed with other solids. Barium, Sodium, Calcium, Strontium are all allkali metals and alkaline earth metals which have a tendency to be unstable unless made to be stable. Pure sodium, for example will explode in water, treating these elements to make them more stable can make the insoluble in water and it would have to be done in in an alcohol, while this would burn in a zippo (Not recomended by the company) putting them into solution may take away and color changing effects they may have so even the ones that should go into solution in water either may not go into it in lighter fluid or may not give the desired effect and would be a waste of time. I'm not entirely sure, what would happen really, it sounds like a lot more trouble than it may or may not be worth.

Edited to add: some compounds of sodium have no effect on flame color or do not burn, so even that can have an effect on the desired results, there's really too much to consider unless you're an expert in pyrotechnics. I wouldn't try.

The way I've seen it done on cheap jet lighters is a wire cage sort of holder that suspends a copper ball over the center of the flame.

I don't understand why you would want a green flame since it can be poisonous and it doesn't do anything except enhance the "cool" factor..

That's the whole point. I had many of these colored torch lighters during my tour. I always pulled those little things off. Don't use a zippo for bongrips. The purest way to get a light is with the sun and a lens. Next to that would be a butane torch.

Why does everybody think i'm using this to smoke weed?

That is exactly the reason I want it. I never plan on using this to smoke so it really dosn't make a differance but I always thought it would be cool to have one with a green flame.

Well zippos aren't associated as really being used for anything else except smoking, if you're looking for a utility lighter I'd get a jet butane lighter.

I don't know if you currently own a zippo but if you even try to tilt it at a 20 degree angle, the flame moves in the opposite direction, not to mention if you want to melt or solder something something that you don't want to drip on your hand, turning a zippo upside down does not work.

I really like the micro jet converter jacket thing.

microjet-lighter2.jpg

turns any standard bic or similar butane lighter into a torch.

If you really wish you could make a copper ring or something that would make the flame green.

From what I understand, Zippos will burn about anything. What about using boric acid dissolved in denatured alcohol as fuel?

Edited to say: Online it says to use Heet gas line additive, which is methanol.

Alcohol will cause heavy rust on stainless steel.

I use my Zippo for all sorts of things, I just don't smoke with it. I don't think a green flame would prevent me from burning paracord or my shoelaces.

I've used rubbing alcohol in a zippo. It burns with a blue flame, and it doesn't leave a chemical taste when lighting cigars. In my experience, it evaporates before it has a chance to rust.
