How do you convert "Grit" to "Micron" when dealing with abrasives? I see them listed both ways. Anyone have a guide for me? Thanks.

Heres the chart I use. 100 Micron = 150 grit, 80 Micron =180 grit 60 Micron= 220 grit, 40 micron=320 grit, 30 Micron = 400 grit, 15 Micron = 600 grit, 9 Micron = 900 grit.
By the way, the new Norax belts are great. I would say that the Norax belts are the greatest improvement in knifemaking equiptment since I sold my first knife in 1980. The chart I have worked up for the Norax belts is X16 Norax = 1200 grit, X22 Norax =800 grit, X30 Norax = 400 grit X65 Norax = 220 grit. If someone has a better chart for the Norax I would appreciate hearing about it as I have never seen a official chart for the Norax belts. Tom Lewis

Thanks Allan for the Norton site. I got my Norax belts from True Grit. They are the U264 belts. There may be better Norax belts than the U264s, but the U264s are all I have used. Tom Lewis

Since we're on the subject I got my first Norax belts, and -- still using the first one! I haven't done a lot of work yet, but these things are incredible. I'm going to put them eventually and that'll be the real thing. But I agree these are the best thing since...well, belt grinders.

Tom and Allan, thanks for the conversion information, very helpful. Would anyone be interested in seeing a spreadsheet table? If so I'll make one and send it to whoever's interested.

Dave,

There's already a conversion spreadsheet somewhere on the net. If I remember correctly, it has conversions for several abrasive formats, too. I won't be able to dig it up until tomorrow.

Brett, thanks that's great. I combined all the info from these sources into a small table in a spreadsheet if anyone would like it. Since I have a sense of what the grits are, the table helps me visualize the other belts. It's like inches to centimeters, sort of gives a point of reference. A crutch. :)
