Has anyone tried the Grizzly 6x12 surface grinder and added a magnetic chuck?

Decent 6x12 magnetic chucks can be had for around $300 for a non electro one. Haven't found many reviews. I would assume that if a magnetic chuck was trued on the grinder with something like a small 46H wheel it should be plenty accurate enough for knife steel?

I have a Central Machinery 6x12 SG with a magnetic chuck and it works fine for me. My machine is very similar to the Grizzly G5963

I just bought a new Bison chuck for my lathe from Grizzly so I have nothing against them but, you can find a whole lot nicer surface grinder for the money.

Any chance you can wait a couple weeks before you buy anything tell your here at the shop and I can go over a bunch of things as far surface grinders go as well as HT ovens. Will you have time for this while your in town. If not just give me a call and I will be glade to go over them with you.

Buy used, I have a covel and it cost me 150$. I've seen guys that got them for free just for hauling them away.

EDIT: That priced included a magnetic chuck too!

Guys where are in the PNW there are very few used machine tools. But they do come up from time to time often over priced though. What many can get for $500 out east we would pay $1500 and thats if you can find it. LOL Often new is a better route then a wore out over price machine.

I have certainly found that to be true Brett, and you obviously know a lot more about it than I do. I have been watching E-Bay and using Search Tempest to see what machines sell for on CL back east. I have bought some fairly big stuff from back east before and put the shipping out for bid on U-ship and had pretty good luck, but I don't know anyone back east that I could have look at something for me and tell me if it was a good machine or not. The price differences I see in Seattle and Portland are certainly much higher than what I have seen listed back east.

Augus7us, I would certainly like to find a deal like that. I see that you are in Ohio, and I am guessing that you have a lot more used machinery for sale in your area.

A good friend found a nice used Bridgeport, but it was after more than 5 years of looking, and it was still 1,000 miles away. A small to medium sized mill is something I really want, and have been looking for over a year now. There have been some less popular makes for sale in the Spokane area, but not many. Spokane, for whatever reason, does seem to have more used machinery for sale, but it's still not much. Right now I am really thinking that something like a Grizzly 704 or PM25 might be the way I end up going. Both are supposed to be more substantial than the Sieg X2 variations, and many folks that have owned both have said they are more rigid than the X3. I don't really want a tilting head as I have been told it's not necessary and decreases rigidity, but I haven't found anything similar that has a fixed head. I know the 704 has the plastic gears, but I've read about the belt conversion and it doesn't sound too difficult. I know bigger/more power is always better, but that size seems to hit the sweet spot for me, and I don't mind going a bit slower and taking smaller cuts. I have some 80% lowers and other gun work I would like to do with a mill. I already have a full woodshop full of equipment, and with my son and I taking the knife making hobby fairly seriously, adding something else that could help with that would be cool. We are beyond excited to get our grinder from Brett on the 23rd.

I have the little grizzly surface grinder and been happy with it. Been using if for a little over a year and no problems yet. I can hold less than .001 tolerance if I do my part.

Thanks Stan, it is nice to hear from someone that has used one. I assume you added a magnetic chuck? Here is a total newb question: is steel like CPM154 magnetic enough to use a magnetic chuck, or do you have to use some of the devices that are magnetic to hold it while you surface it?

Thanks Stan. What does "fine pole" refer to? So being held in place for grinding is enough to magnetize the blades?? Having no experience with such things that surprises me.

On Edit: just looked at your website Stan. Wow! Classically beautiful knives, and I mean really beautiful. Some of the styles remind me of some of the Henry's I carried as a boy.

Fine Pole means the magnetic holding parts are real close together, mine are about an 1/8" apart. If you look at a regular chuch the lines are about 1/2" or more apart. And yes the mag chuck will impart a lot of magnetism to the steel.
Another tip, when you get your grinder and get the chuck fitted, true up the wheel and then grind the surface of the chuck to the machine. Doesn't take much.

I watched a video the other day on that Stan. Makes sense to make sure the chuck is true to the wheel.

I keep going back and looking at your knives.

Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated.

In this age of mass produced crap I always enjoy seeing something beautiful, crafted by hand with pride here in the USA. Though they are obviously heads and tails above the Henry's and Old Timers I carried as a boy, the style of your knives reminds me of the classic lines of those knives.

I just ordered the G5963. Glad to hear it works for you.

Hey CM!
Good luck with your new tools!!
Maybe you won't buy any more fixed blades...
Maybe you'll only be making your own!!

Yes, these are all I need. I'm happy with this fixed blade rotation.
