I just got the grizzly 2x72 grinder and I was thinking what mods i could do on the buffing wheel spindle. If anyone has ideas please include pictures

I love having the buffer wheel on mine but am also considering flap or drum sander attachments.

Like Jagknife, I put a Scotchbrite wheel on mine. Someone at work was tossing some brand new maroon ones away, so I took them home and tried them. I use them for a variety of things. They work great for kydex, deburring, rounding edges, removing light rust, just a few of the things I use it for.

I made a larger table/rest. The stock one is kind of small.

Got rid of the graphite composite pad on the platen and replaced it with a ceramic one. Best thing I did to the grinder.

I did have to replace the power switch, because it broke. When I took it apart, it wasn't constructed very well. I replaced it with a toggle switch (if you have to do this, make sure the new switch can handle the amperage).

a little off topic:
Jagknife- have you tried putting a little bit of ArmourAll on the kydex? It will even out the color on it very nicely.

I have a nice work rest upgrade for the Grizzly. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks

Plus one for the DD work rest. I picked one up from Don and love the thing. Pyro Glass platen, and cut the bottom slope bit off of the platen to give yourself a little more slack belt area. A thick wrap of tape in the middle of the tracking wheel helps the tracking a bit. If you do big knives with long handles I suggest making sure you have enough room to tilt the grinder arm to horizontal as that makes it where the motor isn't in the way as much.

Don, nice looking rig!
One question, what do you have to do to change belts?

I can answer that, that's actually my shop in the picture. You loosen the two bolts on the slide there on the side, slide the rest forward and pull the belt off around it. It can be a pain if the belt has gone all twisty as happens sometimes. The rest keeps the same angle of set up when you slide it forward and backwards.

Been waiting a month and a half but my Grizzly was finally delivered yesterday. I'd like to get or make a wood slicker for the other spindle like the picture below (for leather sheath edges). These are attachments for a Dremel but I bet I can make something that would work.

Since we opened this back up I'll post a mod to the work rest. It uses the same hardware, just mounted differently. This is not a precision upgrade but better than the stock mount. It provides a bit more clearance to use the wheel while the rest is in use. The modification to the rest itself allows it to tilt and stay close to the belt. Like I said, it's pretty redneck but I find it much more sturdy... and it is still just as easy to change belts. It stows away fairly easily, too.

Thanks for posting Rick.
Looks good to me and the price is right.
Just set up Grizzly yesterday and got her to track pretty well thanks to tips I found here.
She was a bit "twisted" out of the box.

You've got to drill 3 holes... 2 in the platen mount and 1 in the arm of the rest, just below the slot. You could just use the slot but if it should ever let go, it would fall between the belt and wheel. That would be bad.

I had to lengthen the slot on the rest table, itself and carve away at the the mounting portion of the arm to allow the table to get closer to the belt on angle. Maybe you'll do something different. Just keep in mind what you need the table to do and grind/cut/drill until it works.

Don's rests are very well made but it looked as if his Grizzly mod made it difficult to change belts. Perhaps, I'm am just not seeing it in the pic.
