H1 Spearfishing Knife

Sal,

We need a spearfishing specific knife in H1! Something along the lines of the Riffe Terminator or Silencer. These are purpose built fish dispatching knives that can also serve to sever float lines, monofilament, or even the cable attached to the spear. The design of said knives is great, but they are made out of 420 stainless which in my opinion doesn't hold a candle to H1. I've been so spoiled by the absolute corrosion proof properties of my Pacific Salt as my all around fishing knife that I can't fathom carrying a non H1 spearfishing knife.

I eagerly look forward to the new H1 spearfishing knife. :)

Sincerely,

actionyak

Edit: I had a chance to test out the braining ability of this reground Jumpaster. I wasn't spearfishing, just hook and line. It got the job done. Little tough with that thick tip, but it definitely made it in and those fish stopped moving! I do think a thin double edge blade would be more effective for this work. I'm heading back to the Keys soon. I've replaced the straps on the sheath with some rubber ones, and it will be worn on each dive. Hopefully we'll have calm winds this time and I'll be able to shoot some fish that warrant a head stick. On this trip, I had to transfer the fish out of the boat cooler to a smaller cooler when I got home. The tail didn't fit. The Jumpmaster solved that quick. Like butta'! I was shocked how easily that tail sliced off. I agree with Surfingringo, this is one wicked slicer.

Should be easy enough to take a Spyderco Aqua Salt, bolt it to a shaft, and, at the front hole, add a spearfishing 'flopper'.

Hey action yak. There is really nothing in that exact category right now. I had an aqua salt for awhile but ended up selling it because I didn't care for the blunted tip. I too occasionally use my knife to brain stab a big guy before hauling him onto the kayak all hot. I use the Pacific salt for the job. I flat grind the spine on all of mine to give them a razor sharp point and make em functional for that kind of work. Folder may not be the best call for free diving/spearfishing though. I think you could mod an aqua salt and make a pretty functional pig sticker. Print out a photo of one and lay a piece of paper or tape across the spine in a line from the tip to just above the h1 logo. I did this and the resulting blade profile looks pretty good to me.

I want an aquasalt for scuba and spearfishing as well. I know they're coming back in all black. But please bring back the yellow and satin!!! I love that combo and am not a super high speed ninja that needs or wants a blacked out salt knife. Some slots in the sheath for webbing or straps would be great too instead of just the holes. It could seriously compete with a lot of dive knives if the sheath had some strap slots.

Hi Action Yak,

Would an Aqua work with a different blade shape?

sal

Hi Sal,

Yes, I think it could definitely work. I haven't handled the Aqua Salt as it's not out yet but I am planning to pick one up as soon as it's available. Most popular spearfishing knife designs right now are a double edge, medium length blade, coming to a very sharp point.

As legato1 mentioned, a sheath that could attach with straps either to the forearm or calf would be ideal. In fact, I'd probably have one in each location. I also like his suggestion of the yellow handle. I like visibility when under the water. I've debated grabbing a Jumpmaster for the calf knife as a "get out of tangled line" knife. I think it would work well for that role, especially given it's original intention. However, for spearfishing, it would still be nice to have even the backup blade ready to dispatch a big fish with a brain shot. Think a big cobia or something along those lines. I am quite happy with the design of the current knives available, but I would love one from Spyderco in H1!

And TravisH, I appreciate the input, but I'm not looking to turn the knife into the spear. I've got the right tool for that job already. :)

Yes, I'll likely have my Pacific Salt clipped to my weight belt, but while underwater on one breath I want the simplicity and strength of a fixed blade.

yeah, i understand exactly where you're coming from. I just wanted to mention the regrind on the pac salt since it made the knife a lot more useful for what we do...even as a folder. As far as the idea of a fixed blade dive knife, what would be your thoughts on having a regular unsharpened spine (that still came to a very pointy tip) instead of a a double edged blade? I tend to prefer that blade style and find it more versatile on the boat and at the cleaning table...and is arguably safer to handle, and I don't think you really give up anything in "stabbiness". I often will put the palm of my left hand on the spine to make heavy push cuts...hard to do that with a double edged knife. Your thoughts?

I haven't been spearfishing in a while, but I totally agree that a pointy H1 fish braining/ freedive knife would be awesome.

My thinking is this would be a very purpose specific knife. I've got other blades on the boat for cutting bait or filleting fish or rigging gear out of the water. And I agree, for those uses I think a single edge is best. In fact, I think the Aqua Salt as designed will be a great general purpose boat knife and I plan to get at least one for that. But I want a double edge fish killing machine strapped on while I'm hunting. That could be too narrow of a market for Spyderco to want to target?

That's kind of what I was wondering. I was just curious if there was a less specific design that might work just as well for your "specific purpose". FWIW, I've done a fair bit of this work with a knife and I have never had an issue slipping 4" of single edged steel into a fishes cranial cavity. ;) Anyway, not trying to kill your idea, just thinking outloud.

Agreed, the tip isn't the issue. If I need it pointier I will make it pointier. The design is awesome I just don't like the all black. The addition of some strap slots would make this an even better boating/diving/fishing knife.

Strap slots would be a welcome addition to any version of the aqua salt IMHO. Especially if that could be accomplished without adding size or creating any other disadvantages for the folks that aren't interested.

Hi Sal,

I don't think the line cutter would be necessary and I think a great blade length would be 4.5 inches.

Thanks for taking an interest in this!

Yes, thanks for the interest. It's very hard to find dive knives with good steel, I hate 420. I personally think the Aqua salt design is perfect size and shape for a dive knife, all it needs is the strap slots. The tip looks strong enough for some of the weird utility uses encountered when diving and pointy enough to dispatch fish, if it's not a few minutes with a grinder or stone will fix that. That serrated h1 and light grippy frn are awesome... Especially if it comes in yellow. I missed the first run of aquasalt, this time I'm going to have to get two or 3.
