Saw that Harbor freight has a 1.5hp 56c industrial farm motor with a 5/8'' horizontal shaft on it. It sells for 149.99, then use the 20% coupon. Sounds like it might work for a grinder build, since it is completely sealed. Not sure if its AC or DC, but either way it should work? I might give it go and see what happens.

I've only seen the 1 HP totally enclosed motor advertised, all the others are rated compressor duty. It would certainly work for a grinder. It is AC.
Don't give the seller and price as it can be construed as deal spotting.

he General knife Discussion is NOT Bladeforums all-purpose bulletin board. Please look around or ask for the right place to post.
We have a Shop Talk forum for BladeSmith Questions and Answers, so I moved this there.

The grinder I just built uses the 1HP farm duty motor from HF. The farm duty motor is totally enclosed. I didn't see a 1.5HP version of the motor... if I had, I'd have bought that instead. Anyway, as long as it is Farm Duty and not Compressor duty, I think you're correct that it would be totally enclosed and suited to the task.

I almost went the HF motor route. But my wife told me to be patient(yeah right) and look around. I was able to get a Baldor M3558 (2hp, 1750 rpm) motor, new in the box off the Bay for $200 shipped.

Greg,
How does that motor work with your grinder? Does it get bogged down at all? What's the difference between farm duty and compressor duty?

What's the difference between farm duty and compressor duty?

1-1/2 Horsepower Compressor Duty Motor

"Open dripproof enclosure"
Metal dust can infiltrate and smoke the motor

1 Horsepower Farm Duty Agricultural Motor

Totally enclosed, fan cooled

Totally enclosed, fan cooled TEFC

Is very important in metal grinding motor

Works fine so far. It should be noted, however, that unlike many knifemakers I don't put a lot of pressure on the blade when grinding. I'm not in a hurry... I take my slow, sweet time. So bogging down is unlikely to be a problem for me even with my lower powered motor.

If you are going to make straight knives I believe a 1 1/2 HP motor is the smallest you should get with or without a variable speed . A 1 HP just doesn't have the power. Of course if someone was to make you a gift --- ? Frank
