Hardness of Spyderco's VG10 blades?

Thanks for the link. I can't believe AG Russell is selling AUS-8 steel versions of the Delica and Endura. VG-10's much better. Must be old models.

I would expect HRC 58-60, the number given in earlier catalogs.
A new catalog has no data on Rc.
On Ritter's site EQUIPPED TO SURVIVE the hardness is given as HRC 57-60.
Earlier knives (Shabaria) had, IIRC, HRC 59-61.
Anyhow, HRC 57 is somewhat disappointing for a VG-10 blade.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I'm looking into getting my Delica re-heat treated to HRC 61. If it can be done, I'll let you know how it turns out and if it's worth doing.

From my personal experience there's a huge difference in performance between HRC 57 and 61.

The reason I originally asked was that I just bought a new Delica 4 plain edge and the edge retention and sharpness is somewhat disappointing compared to my own "utility" knife made from D2 (hardened by Paul Bos to HRC 61).

I would never do this. It is complicated process. Spyderco's heat treat is good, even if new heat treatment will be successful, you will not see much of improvement.

Edge retention depends not only on hardness, it is more complicated. It is also wear resistance and toughness. And different steels have different proporties. D2 is tool steel and has very good wear resistance and toughness, but not as stain resistant as VG10.
Regarding disapointment of sharpness of D4, it is strange, but possible. I have three D4 and all of them came very sharp.
Don't you think that it would be just money efficient to sell this D4 and get ZDP-189 D4 even at e-bay prices?

Spyderco packs probably the best VG-10. Al Mar is impressive too. 58-59 is the hardness but as said, that is only a piece of the pie. If you want good steel and cannot justify spending S30V money, VG-10 is the way to go over AUS-8 any day.

Wait a minute. S30V is an ok steel, but I prefer VG-10. S30V is merely the steel of the moment, and now ZDP is threatening to dethrone it. You'd sure hate to be caught with yesterday's steel in your pocket!

I read somewhere here on BF that the published hardness is only the target, but not necessarily the actual hardness. I'd be curious to know if that's true and what the real spread is for different manufacturers and steels. I'm sure that I'll be wondering forever, since most companies would consider this proprietary information if they have the data.

I have a Delica 4 with the ZDP-189 blade too. I like it, but I've put it away with my other "collectible" Spydies.

Just wish the Delica 4 came with a S30V blade and fully flat ground. I may attempt to make a blade myself. If I get around to it -I'll post it here.

Thanks for the replies.

S30V is the premium steel of the times and I do not see it going anywhere...ZDP is a sprint run steel and I have not found a ZDP D4 to be impressively better over my Para.
