Has anyone ever used black walnut to stain a blade?

I was thinking about doing it with a cheap knife just to see how it turns out, anyone done it before?

I wonder. It may work. Not all of us have black walnut trees nearby. If I were going to attempt it, I'd use the green fruit. With the skin still on it. Or
you might can soak the dried ones and just drop the knife blade in with them and stir it every so often for several hours. DM

@David, I was thinking about mashing some and then soaking them in water with it, then when I pull it out take a little paint brush and mess with it until it looks cool, then cutting some stuff once it's dry to see how it holds up.

@Buck, Hulls.

You can't stain the surface of steel and have it last. Stains will wipe off or wear very quickly. Patinas and the like actually change the surface of the steel. Staining is only ON the surface.

It appears that the video shows actal patination using walnut hulls. They are acidic.
