I posted this on another forum but haven't really had much luck with responses so I'm posting here! I debated on whether or not I should post this in the "cold steel knives" (https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/cold-steel-knives.895/) part of this forum as there might be some connection between Hattori, Cold Steel and the knives that i've got in my possession.

I'm copy/pasting my other post here so if anyone has any information i'd love to hear it!

My father in law had these knives for an unknown number of years and almost sold them at a garage sale for a few $ each. Seeing them, after longing after Hattori cowry x hunters/tantos I had to take them off his hands! Yes I paid him for them...

As seen on boxes these are from "coast knives" from Portland Oregon. The only markings on the knives are 440 stainless steel and Taiwan.

The grip, brass on each end of the handle, are very high quality and look identical to the tantos I've found pictures of online (google). Even the case looks identical but mine have some kind of kanji pressed into the material .

Reading the Hattori collector site I've noticed that 440 stainless in Hattori terms could mean anything from aus-6 to aus-8 depending on the maker of the knife.

"No one seems to be sure which “440” it really was, many suggesting and perhaps hoping that it is 440C. But in those days “440” could mean alot of things.(Back then SOG used “440A” to mean Aus6A, and Browning used “440” to mean Aus8A)"

"Winchester had Hattori OEM at least three models two of which were numbered . They were made with Aus8 but marked 440 Stainless as was customary at the time."

Also found identical knives with the brand "taylor" as well which is confirmed as a Hattori offshoot as per the Arizona customs website. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/taylor-tanto-fixed-blade-knife-440-1498078559

Cold steel: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/23472415776...624&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Anyone want to chime in and confirm that these are Hattori or crush my hopes and dreams and find proof that they're not?

I thought Hattori was only made in Japan? I didn’t know they had a factory in Taiwan.

Hi,
I'm the owner of the Hattoricollector site. I am afraid your knife in question has nothing to do with Hattori whatsoever. It is a copy of the Cold Steel Tanto manufactured in Taiwan and imported and sold by Coast Knives, an Oregon US company founded by Henry Brands in 1919. The company still exists today.

Your reference to "Taylor" having anything to do with Hattori is in error. The knife in the photo is a "Valor".
Hattori made several knives for Valor of Miami, another US importer.
Taylor Cutlery sold copies of the Cold Steel Tanto as well. They were made by Seto Cutlery of Seki, and some knives
are marked "Taylor-Seto".

Finally that sheath says 忍者 "NINJA".
Mr Hattori doesn;'t do that kind of..well..you know, lol
Regards
Ken

I'm pretty sure Hattori is only Japan.
There are multiple references on the Hattori site to their knives being made in Taiwan.

Thank you for your time. So I've got high quality copies of cold steel tantos that look exactly like the Hattori made ones. That puts this to bed.

Just to be clear, all Hattori made knives are made in the one factory in Seki Japan.
References and photos of models made in Taiwan n my website are ones ordered by the OEM contractor, and are shown
solely to show the history of the model.
This is what I have read too. Thanks for clarifying.
