Ok gearheads, looking for a good headlamp for the money.
Something I can track wounded deer for awhile or set up camp in the dark.
Need your info. Thanks

Definitely go with PETZL, they are by far the best IMHO, or maybe something by princeton Tech but I personally like Petzl doesnt eat up too much battery and have several different styles and designs on the headbands, plus they are very durable, never get tangled, go down to like a local REI and once you handle it you will be sold on buying it........

Also the battery lasts a very long time because it isnt a halogen bulb, like others and, I Think, it runs for about 20 bucks, but I may be wrong........

I'm shopping for a headlamp too. Petzl is what I've decided on so far. They do come with halogen bulbs and have a regular bulb option. They use the screw-base bulb instead of the flange-base bulb. They achieve the long burn times with the 4.5v battery.

Spelunkers/cavers are the ones to ask. I've found only one forum at http://www.caves.org/cavetalk on the same website (www.caves.org) are some links to online stores with headlamps for sale. They have stuff beyond Petzl and Princeton Tec.

IMO has a 3 white LED screwbase bulb for the 4.5v Petzl headlamps

The PETZL isnt fully water proof, it is water resistant and can stand some rain, I dont know if you would want to switch the bulb out or not because it may eat up batteries alot faster, the batteries can also be hard to find sometimes........

Well this is my first post in G&G..what a better topic than headlamps. Only a total gadget geek would wear a light on their head.

Seriously though if you are doing any practical work at night in limited light you need both hands free AND directed lighting to see what you're doing. Though I'm sure there may be better I have found the PAL gold light to be the best deal for my $. For a head holder I took an 8"x1" piece of kydex and molded it around a form. It holds my pal light secure and has integral clip. Now I can clip it to my cap. For normal work I wear the light resting just at the right edge of the bill. For tight close work I turn the hat around backwards, wear the light clip to the side and I can direct the light for upclose handwork. If I want some more powerful headlights I double up and wear them binoc style at each side of bill. Either way, quite secure, decent light for most tasks and great battery life.

Mickey, you're right, the 4.5V batteries can be hard to find sometimes. Most people I know who own Petzls have switched to the AA conversion so that they can use recargables if they want, or stop at the local gas station, party store, 7-11, whatever, and get more AA's. Their favortie model so far has been the "Arctic". It has a remote battery pack that you can strap to your waist or across your chest to keep the batteries warm. This also takes the weight of the batteries off your head. These same people I know use it for a helmet light while mountain biking at night, with no battery weight on the headstraps, and rough trails, the light doesn't bounce around as much or cause helmets to knock around as much.
