if i am going to start learning to heat treat my tool steels, what is the best thickness to learn on, since maybe thicker is slower to heat, harder to burn up, or maybe thinner is better cause it is easier to get a more even/consistent heat over the whole blade...???? input please
thanks

I've taught myself on 1/8" thick 1084. It's pretty easy. If you are using propane and no forge, it's tough to overheat, but a forge set up and a hotter gas could result in problems. Home heat treat is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, but I don't think there is all that much of a difference between thicknesses.
