Newbie here, I will be starting my first knife in the next two weeks. I have most equipment on the way just need to determine what to use for heat treating. I will be using O-1 for the knives. I was looking at using an oxygen/ecetylene torch or I just found the "Poor Boy" propane gas forge on ebay. The other option would be a heat treating furnace but the cost would be more. I like the hammon line Brian Goode has on his blades with O/A torch, but I was wondering if anyone had an experiance or knowledge on the Poor Boy. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Hammon lines are hard to do with 01 but useing a torch is the right way to go about it if you want to try it with 01. Do not heat the spine of the blade as much. This is not much help as I have not been able to do it myself, good luck.
Cheers Ron.

The poor boys are pretty decient, but if you want a hamon on O1 you must use a torch and only get the edge above critical. With other more shallow hardening steels it's not as essential.

just go slow and do this several times. It will cycle the steel just as a forged knife would go through. You just cant soak it correctly on a large knife like an oven would so I found doing multiple heating cycles makes a big difference.
