Hi all,
I have some steel from Sanwa special steel (Chinese) the company has been started by the former specialist steel man from Takefu steel in Japan or so I've been told. I have two pieces of Sk5 carbon steel clad with sus410 stainless.
Has anyone heat treated Sk5 that could give me some advice. Do I treat it the same as 1084?

Regards,
Ben.

I have a giant saw blade that is made from SKS51. I only have a forge to ht it so all I can really do is ht it like 1084. My hardness files tell me it gets around 60-65 HRC after quenched in preheated canola oil. Other than that I’ve made a few blades out of it and after tempering to 400-425 it passes a brass rod test. I can’t tell you about it’s edge retention though I haven’t used a blade made from it enough, but it’s used in bandsaws and saw blades like mine so it’s got to be tough. Again I’m talking about SKS51.

I believe SKS5 is 8670. SK5 is a 1080.
