Hey, im not really an arts and crafts kind of guy, but i came across these necklaces by fred perrin :

http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/...urnUrl=/Fred-Perrin.aspx?product-listing.aspx

Hes obviously using a nylon chord similar to 550 but thinner, and i can get that stuff

But the beads are confounding me, ive tried a couple of different ways of looking but my google-fu is weak.

Anyone know of a place that will sell metal beads that have some weight to them? The finished necklaces weigh in at almost half a pound and have a variety of beads, of varying diameter and length. the beads that go on the neck are round but some of the ones that hang seem to be brass cubes that could really sting and possibly lacerate if the necklace is swung like a flail.

If anyone could help me out id really appreciate it.

Jewlery making Supply places have beads of all sizes in all precious metals.

@ revdevil, im not looking for any type of precious metal, just steel copper and brass. Im trying to keep this project under about 50 bucks.

Get stainless steel nuts and polish them up, carefully cut up some brass and steel roundstock and carefully drill holes through them. A trip to the hardware store together with some creativity will produce results.

I really get where you guys are coming from but its just not quite what im looking for, I want some of those intricatley detailed beads, and im just not a good enough crafstman to dremel any designs into a nut, and if you dont then you end up at a bar/nightclub with people wondering : wtf is up with the guy with bolts on 550 chord around his neck???

As far as im concerned a beaded necklace on a man is already pushing it,.

After taking a closer look with the zoom function on that site, I'm just about certain the majority of the beads on there are readily available at most bead retailers.

With two pre-teen daughters in the house, I step on those dratted things on a nearly daily basis.

Yeah you would think it would be that simple but its not, alot of these beads are exceedingly feminine, im looking at firemountain.com right now but still i would like to find a better resource.

Orientaltrading. I'm not going to include the ".com", but you get the idea.

Near me, we have a pair of craft stores, one's called Michaels, one's called Hobby Lobby. Michael's has a web presence, with a couple pics of beads.

Generally, Google is about picking the words which uniquely distinguish the product you are looking for. For instance, I plugged in "metal craft beads".

The bead stores and websites have some metal beads but they're usually very light. If they're large they're hollow.

If ya wanna do it the hard way, most of those Perrin beads could be made on a lathe. Some of them could have the pattern etched into them.

The first I heard of this concept was on this video, where McGrath described his teacher's "rosary of death," which IIRC was steel cable and assorted nuts, so the hardware suggestions here are pretty close to the mark. Perrin just went slightly upscale and charged a large mark-up.

BTW, I got one of these. If you have neck problems, you'll find these uncomfortable for long-term wear. The cord also stains my neck blue. Perrin used to make them in wood, for those who needed something lighter in weight. You could try it in wood with some brass or stainless washers among the beads.

What he said. (no offense a.gimp) If you're having to pull your necklace off and use it as a weapon you're in a very serious, or just very weird situation. Rosaries actually are in trend right now, in my area of course it is with a particular crowd and they like them "blinged" out, but they wouldn't look out of place at clubs here. Again, it seems a person is purposely putting themselves in a situation (club where this wouldn't be weird) that they may need to defend themselves and picking a really poor defensive weapon to do so, I can't see any other reason on earth a person would want to wear that.

Now a rosary, well if I were Catholic I'd have some really cool ones (I made a couple rosaries for friends of mine and made me almost wish I was Catholic, I'm still tempted to get one), probably just a penal rosary (I know, I laughed the first time I heard that too). But in a country where we have so many other legal options I wouldn't consider it a weapon.

Decoratively speaking a nice gold pendant on a chain is still a solid way to go.

To answer your question, with my experience of trying to find stuff to make the rosary, visit bead stores in person. Searching online is a pain in the a$$ and you're still not sure unless you're really good with picturing it from the dimensions and weight they show online, exactly what the bead feels like. You'll likely need to go to more than one store, as not all carry the same bead selection. You may want to make them and sell them. Seems there's a market. Just two nights ago my friends wife was laughing about how she bought a necklace from a little girl at a football game for 20 bucks that she knows is at most a buck in materials. But she likes the necklace and the girl made 19 bucks. (for those of you looking at anything strung on a wire versus actually "linked" only think about cost of materials, trust me when I say 20 minutes tops for assembly. That's how long it took me to string the beads on the rosary, and there are A LOT on one of those).

No offense taken. I got it in trade and it's so heavy I can't wear the thing. I think the necklace isn't terribly practical, but it's one way to weaponize your EDC and give you another layer. Problem is this thing is meant to be worn over clothing, so it draws attention. If anyone is considering investing in Perrin's jewelry, they're better off going with one of his bracelets instead. Much lower profile. Unfortunately his demo video was taken off YouTube. The bracelets were used for eye shots when hand-held, and used to reinforce wrist strikes when they were worn.

Here ya go : http://szaboinc.com/bracelets.html The video is still up if you know where to look.
@ gimp, please PM me.

I like the look of necklace, it would fit with what i usually where so it is artially a fashion choice. I doubt im ever going to whack anyone with it except for unfortunate friends :)
