Helle Knives - Any good??

I've had a Helle Nying for years. Short blade, thick handle, insanely sharp, durable edge. If the others come close to its performance, they are worth trying.

Helle Yes they are good :D...

I had one and I should have never gotten rid of it. It was a helle eggen. This was easily the sharpest knife I had ever received from a factory. This is what let me to starp sharpening my own knives because I never new a knife coudl be so sharp. They have a rat tail tang.... so they are not going to be as strong as something like a bark river, but they are plenty strong enough. I have batoned with one with no problems. The steel they use is also incredible. It is laminated with a high carbon steel core with a very high hardness level. The outer layers are soft so that the blade is tough. They are worth every penny!

Mine is a Helle Millstone (Kvernstein). Although I've never used it, the build quality is excellent. On par with Karesuando and the nicer knives from Marttiini.

The ergonomics of Helle knives vary considerably between models, so I suggest trying in person if possible before purchasing.

I was drooling over this model when I was browsing Ragnar's website a while ago: I generally don't like the aesthetics of more traditional scandinavian blades, but this is a real looker!

I've had a Harding and Odel for several years. I like taking them on hiking trips. Fit and finish is excellent and they are well put together IMO.

The Harding on the trail....

Great! Glad to hear the positive feedback.

The Eggen is one of the ones I really like. Actually there's about 7 or 8 I like.

Their tang isn't ideal but its not a deal breaker. I'm sure it can handle most anything I plan to do with it.

I had the eggen, get it. It is awesome. Do not me dumb and trade it off to get another knife like I did. I will probably have another in the near future. That knife took a wonderful edge and held it forever.

I have a Folkkniven and the Besseggen. I really like their laminated stainless. Up next here real soon is the Ny Fjording.

Helle are very nice knives. Scary sharp. They have the rat-tail tang that most scandis have but they usually peen then over a washer at the pommel so they are quite strong.

I love Helle knives!!!

I forgot to mention the rationale behind the "rat tail" tang on most Helle knives.

On a conventional full tang knife like an ESEE or may Bark Rivers has that metal exposed on the handle. In very cold weather (rather common in Norway, Sweden, and Finland) the blade of the knive serves just like a heat fin on a radiator and pulls heat from the hand...freezing it . So they have gone with through handle tangs and birch handles because birch is said to feel warm in the hand and won't freeze to the hand in extreme weather.

Another reason to like Helle.

One "Nyung" and two "Fejldman" (one is a spare if god forbid I should ever lose one).

Both have handles that look pretty odd to the American eye, but once you use them :D !

Collection is a couple hundeed knives at present lost the rest in a cross country move a few years back.

Theives didn't get the Helles because they were in the brief case with my money and my .45, and the brief case was with me 24/7.

But of the entire batch, the Helle's were and are the most appreciated and used.

Sheath is 'dangler' and the leather could be a tad thicker (but no complaints).

These are users, not display case fodder and the two most useful and used knives I own.

Pick a style you like and don't hesitate, you will be pleased.

FWIW my third favorite knife is a recreation Viking Era stick handle and pukko style blade, and made by Helle, same great steel.

As always JMHO.

Regards,
:) ...
