Hello all, I have looked at the past threads on both of these, but I want your opinions as far as these two on a head to head basis. I definitely want one, but I am having trouble deciding. I like the axis lock, but feel that the VG-10 steel on the SERE may be better for an EDC. Please help...

Thanks,
Phil

If steel is your only question, then you shouldn't worry about the 806! The D2 is great stuff, and certainly on par with VG10 (IMHO).

However, the blade shapes are drastically different. When you say for an EDC, I take it you mean as a utility knife, right? For a utility knife, you might be better off with the SERE...

By EDC, I mean everything up to and including self defense if needed. But yes, I would say mainly for utility purposes.

Well, I carry my 806D2 all the time and it makes a great utility knife, but so would the SERE. You just need to decide what shape you like better. Handling both would help I bet. One concern might be the way the smooth surface on the SERE feels in your hand. I didn't like the feeling of the finish on the Shrike (which has the same smooth surface).

If you want a good EDC knife get the Al Mar you won't be dissapointed. But if you plan on using a knife strictly as a weapon go for the AFCK.

Both would fill your requirements very well.

I have an 806 and a SERE in my EDC rotation and feel both have features that make them better than the other, if that makes any sense.

Contrary to what others are saying I find the 806 to be a great slicer and general utility knife - may have the edge on the SERE in this area.

To be honest the deciding factor in my mind (if I had to choose one over the other) would be warranty/service and the locking mechanism.

Benchmade wins on both counts.

If I were you I'd flip a coin to choose - otherwise you'll end up with both or go crazy trying to decide :D

I never said the 806D2 wouldn't slice...I just think the blade shape isn't really designed for utility.

That said, I use mine as a utility knife all the time! heh :p

These are the two that I was referring to, sorry I missed the statement you made in your second post :)

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I appreciate the feedback. The main problem is that I don't know where I can go to handle the Al Mar, as I don't know of any dealers in my area. I have handled the Benchmade and feel that it is great, but I guess my main concern is the corrosion resistance of the D2 steel. Maybe I am over analyzing such a small detail. Just wondering...

Thanks again,
Phil

I wouldn't worry too much about corrosion in an AFCK.

I've used my AFCK for greasy kitchen work, then wiped off most of the grease and flushed it out with water. I only got around to cleaning it up more fully a few days later, and there was no corrosion to be seen anywhere. Even though the easy to scratch top layer of BT2 has scratched off in places, the corrosion protection is still there. The liners are satin-finished, making them less rusty than a cheaper bead-blast finish.
