I have a number of Case knife tang stamp charts but none of them match the knife I was recently given. It’s a Wild Horse custom Case knife so maybe that’s the issue? I tried to attach a few photos but couldn’t figure that out. The tang stamp reads: . . . .
CASE XX
USA
6.51749L SS
. . . .

Thanks!

Sorry … there are four dots above Case XX and four dots below 6.51749L SS.

By the model number you provided, it should be a Mini Copperlock model with bone stag (bone jigged to appear like stag) covers. The first “6.5” denotes the cover material, the model is 1749 “L” for lockback.

As for the production year, a photo of the tang stamp would be helpful, but the model is not very old in the history of Case knives. Started production in 1997, I believe.

Picures would help but they're relatively easy to identify using their stamp identification. If you click the link below it will show you the different stamps. I'm sure you can firure it out pretty quickly!

Thanks … I have that chart but I must be blind. I don’t see any that fit the tang stamp of my knife. There’s only one with the pattern number (1997-1999) included but none with Case XX over USA and the dots are over Case XX and under USA or in this case the pattern number. The way I laid it out up above is exactly as it’s stamped on the tang. I’ll try again to attach photos. Case XX Custom WH

If you click on Case XX Custom WH you’ll find 3 photos. Thanks!

Thanks … I just commented below with three photos.

I agree that it doesn’t match anything on the tang stamp chart. It does seem to be a strange one. The USA and pattern number suggest 1997-1999, but the dots do not - as you have already suggested.
My guess is that it’s a fairly recent production, but hopefully someone who knows more about the reason for the discrepancy comes along. Or maybe Wild Horse Customs would know the answer.

Appears to be very modern, 2022, if my calculations are correct. I believe they started using that stamp in 2020 with ten dots (5 above and 5 below), and they remove a dot every production year. -2 dots means 2 years into the run.
Thank you … the Case charts I have show a different configuration than that for 2020-2029 but I do know this was just purchased. It was given to me as a gift. I can usually figure out case knives easily because of the charts but this one stumped me! I didn’t know if it’s an odd stamp because of the customization by Wild Horse or what. I know it doesn’t matter in the scheme of things but for some reason I like to know. It’s too “pretty” to use but it’s the thought that counts!

I just think the charts, while usually helpful, aren’t always exact. Little discrepancies aren’t uncommon and it’s probably hard to keep changing publications to match perfectly.

If it were a more historical model, say something they’ve been producing since the 1800’s, I’d be far less confident, and there’d be a larger margin for error. But, since the mini copperlock has only been around for about 25 years, I feel good in assuming yours is pretty new with that stamp. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.

It’s definitely new … unless Wild Horse customizes older knives? Thanks for your help … everyone’s help!

Just because I said I would, here’s a photo of the tang stamp on my 2021 manufacture large copperlock (1549 model, as opposed to the 1749 of the mini). Just like yours, it says “USA” under the CASE XX, which isn’t indicated on the charts, only mine has 9 dots instead of 8 because it’s one year older than yours.
