I just got a vintage Gerber LMF with sawteeth. Where could I look for more info about the knife. If I remember right, there had been different designs.
Mine has a flat grind drop point blade.

Aside from the one you mentioned there’s also a clip point lmf (both sawback and no sawback versions; both have saber grinds) and a no sawback, full flat, drop point one; there’s pics online, they’re not hard to find.

Thanks, I found the pics, but could not find any info about the steel. I contacted Gerber about the production date, but still wait for the answer

Pretty sure it’s a 440 variant, most likely either 440a or 440c.

Wow, there is hardly any info to be found, except for some pics from some vintage BMFs or LMFs that are offered for sale.
I contacted Gerber, they asked for some pics of the knife, to see what I have!
Seems, all the info is lost? No collectors here that still have an old LMF?

I also remember the LMF being 440A. Mostly for the added corrosion resistance, and overall toughness, compared to 440C, in addition to being cheaper to manufacture.

I own two one is flat ground with saw teeth like yours, I purchased it new in 1986/7 and it was advertised as having 440A blade steel. It has been a great companion on countless camping and hiking trips. Holds an edge and it’s easy to sharpen in the field. I use a small diamond stone that I glued to the back of the sheath. The second I picked up on eBay about ten years ago. As far as I know these were the only two blade grinds and you I've seen both with and without saw teeth.

Gerber sent me a reply. I had sent them pics of the knife and the serial number.
They told me my LMF was made in the late 80s - early 90s.
It is a shame that they can't give more detailed info. I thought they would keep record of the production.

Hi there! Im a great fan of the old survival/tactical Gerbers. I love this modell and had several of them in my collection. The LMF came in a few variation during the years it was made (between 1988-1997). The flat grid droppoint modell was made only for a short period, the first 2 years 1988-89. It had a more flat handle shape than later knives. In 1990 the model got more of a spear point blade and more ronded handle shape. The blade shape was redesigned in the mid 90-ties. The blade shape got narrower and the logo on the sheath got a yellow frame instead of the grey. I think the were all made in 440A surgical steel. In late 1990-ties a brown version was made for Cutlery shoppe.
