I recently acquired this M1860 Cavalry Officers Saber, It is a 19th century imported and unmarked Civil War era saber but the sharkskin wrapped grip shape is throwing me off. It is completely flat on the top of the grip. I am assuming it was made either in Germany or France and imported during the war for private sale.
I know that different makers may have had their own interpretation as to the grip style since they were not regulation. Has anyone ever saw this and is it a Civil War era 1860 Officers Saber? Thanks for the help!
I cant post pictures so I am adding this link to another thread.

Welcome aboard. You are generally in pretty good hands over there but it is not an ACW sword. I'd question the French mle1896 remark (he is often quite wrong but does know US swords). I saw it the other day and I don't really have much to add. It is not really my wheelhouse but the inside of the counterguard does show (imo) a later sword of the Third Republic (1870>), not an earlier mle1822 variant. Look also on the blade side of the guard for a French cutler's mark, something like this.

You could also run it up the the flagpoles at

There are a lot more French familiar eyes at those venues than here. A run of the mill mle French cavalry officers sword of the Third Republic had horn grips. So, whether it is older than newer, it is fairly unique in my mind. It just doesn't quite click my regular registers, so I send you to the experts. Many more familiar with French swords in the facebook group but avoid the guessers that don't admit it.

Thanks! Unmarked but I’ll check again! I also tried the first forum you have listed there. They never sent a confirmation email to activate my account and will not answer my emails. Kind of frustrating since I paid over $700 for it and nobody really knows what it is lol. I don’t think its an 1896 either.

For Sword Forum International, you can try pinging Mark McMorrow on facebook

He tends to disregard any that might not meet his username and email edicts, or simply hasn't checked in a while. He is tired of me telling him some are waiting.

Cheers

GC,
I appreciate the help but I don’t have a facebook account.
I tried registering again with another email that I have but it would not let me. I emailed him twice so I guess he doesn’t care or check and I’m not going to beg him to let me sign up lol.
But seriously thank you.
Have a nice weekend!
