Hemp in the Heat-A Tilley Question

I've been looking at the T4. I really like the hemp version, but I wonder how much warmer it would be in extreme heat over the cotton duck. Does anyone have any experience with the TH4? I'd go with one of the lightweight models, but I'd prefer a natural fabric.

While we're on the subject, I was wondering if the hemp Tilleys are machine washable, like their cotton ones. From the information I'm seeing I'm not sure. Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread or anything.

Thanks!

The thing I like about cotton in the summer is the evaporative cooling when I sweat.

My synthetic Tilly feels clammy and the brim flips in the breeze. Sure, my cotton Tilley has a constant sweat ring on it but, it is so easy to toss in the washer I find the sweat ring easy to overcome. The synthetic aircool top is a mixed blessing in that it lets sunshine get through and hit my scalp. The aircool top does flow a lot more air then those British beads which seem worthless to me.

I will buy more cotton Tilley hats but, no more synthetics. Hemp?

I happen to have a hemp T4, that I wore today as a matter of fact.

I don't think it's warmer then cotton duck, but it's slightly heavier. To me the heat issue is regulated by the headband, wide brim and fairly tall crown.

I don't think it's machine washable, I dunk mine in a bucket with some detergent and oxy-clean, that works fine.

I like it because I think it looks much better (then cotton).

I too have a Hemp TH4 Tilley.
Great hat. Seriously. Heavy duty and broad of brim.

I chose to go withthe natural color and haven't regretted it. Just wash it regularly and you should have no problems with it getting inordinately stained. The dark colored one looks sharp, but I suspect that it would retain heat a lot more.

I love the hat and would buy the same one all over again.

Get one. Enjoy!

Thanks guys. I think I'll give it a try. We've already hit the upper 90's and there's a lot of summer to go. I'm outside most of the day and the back of my neck is what really catches the sun. That wide brim should be just the ticket and the hemp just looks so cool.

I know--I lived in DFW for several years and I thought that I was going to die in the summer. 95 degrees with 95% humidity.

I grew up in Phoenix with up to 122 degrees and I still prefer that heat to where you are!

I emailed Tilley with that question and here was their reply:

I would suggest a Tilley T-Model hat (made of cotton duck) or a Tilley Hemp hat. They are both great fabrics. The hemp is great at wisking the sweat away from your forehead. Depending on hat model the hemp maybe a little heavier in weight then the cotton. However, the cotton has a nice structured look to it where as the hemp material has a relaxed linen like look to it. Therefore, it really all depends on personal preference. Below is a hat comparison chart that you can use as an aid in selecting a Tilley hat that meets your needs.

The chart showed that the T4 in cotton weighs 5.5 oz. and the TH4 weighs in at 5.6. That's negligible enough that I think I will try the hemp.

I bought one of the Mylantium baseball-style caps with the roll-down sun shield for the back of the neck. The thing is so damn heavy and hot that I can't imagine ever wearing it under any circumstances. It is the only Tilley product that has ever disappointed me. I've had it for a year or two and I'm thinking of calling Alex' bluff and seeing if he is a "straight shooter" who will give me full credit towards one of the hemp wide-brimmed hats.
