I’m considering buying a heretic hydra and wanted to see what everyone’s thoughts are on heretic vs. Microtech. Hyrda’s can be $600-$800 so I’m curious, does the quality match the price?

I’ve come to trust Microtech but single actions can be hard to get and very costly.

What is the verdict on Heretic quality and reputation?

Heretic may as well be Microtech as far as quality goes, it's Tony's son's company. The main difference will be styling.
You think pops swings by to show him a thing or two? That is great to know. Hmmm.. I’m digging the copper hydra.

don't have that model but got a handful plus of the manticore x models and a cleric. also own plenty of microtechs to compare them to.

high quality and no issues in mine. have no fear of heretic.

I have a Heretic Hydra. It's a fine knofe overall, but I have two squawks;

1. The little "safety" cover over the release button is small and very thin, and the incised pattern is not aggressive enough to ensure that it can be swung out of the way in a critical deployment.

2. The cocking device seems to rely on the lanyard for ease of operation. I haven't removed the cord to see how the operation would be impacted, but I suspect it would be rendered rather more difficult.

I have not yet had an opportunity to compare head-to-head with a HALO. I have one coming in, and I'll let you know how they compare.

Lot of failure to fire/retract issues with my Manticore E. Been meaning to send it in. I've never owned a Microtech. I have two other OTF's, and both are superior in my opinion. A Hogue Exploit and a small Brian Tighe Twist Tighe. I bought it March of 2020 I believe, and I didn't have a failure until about 6 months ago. I don't over mess with them, but the frequency of failure is at the point where I no longer carry it. I was actually going to carry it Monday, then only the tip came out, and I said nope and grabbed something else.

I dont own any Heretic knives, but I have handled a few. They seem to fire smoother than a Microtech, but I wonder if thar could be at a cost like K.O.D. K.O.D. is experiencing.

I keep trying to talk myself into a SA, but I can't come up with a compelling reason. From a practical standpoint they are a pain in the neck. My favorite thing about carrying an automatic is that I can pull it out, make a cut, and snap is shut without even taking my eye off what I am doing. Thus I prefer DA.

Also, the want factor isn't high enough to spend that kind of scratch on a fidget toy. Maybe one day, and I would be happy with either brand.

My Manticore was rather gritty out of the box. It smoothed out, but is by far the most difficult to open, takes a lot of pressure to move the switch. If BT or Hogue made a 3-3.25" model I'd be all over it instead. The Tighe is my favorite. The Hogue is nice in that it has a metal switch, which is very smooth (equal to the Tighe) but it has a lot of travel to engage.

My experience as well. My Manticore X and Cleric fire hard and smooth every time and feel to me to be built as well as my Microtechs. The styling is a bit more tough and less sleek and refined but that is an aesthetic design choice and doesn’t seem to reflect a lack of refinement inside in my opinion.

This is my complaint with the Hydra. You don't *need* the lanyard to operate the charging handle, but it is substantially more fiddly without it.

I do prefer the Halo 5/6, but that's mostly about aesthetics, they're both first-rate. I don't use them as EDC knives, they're toys for me. I suspect the Hydra blade is better for actual use; the Halo blade is a wedge.

I wish his dad would travel from North Carolina to Florida and teach sonny boy how to grind and put an edge on CPM 154. I bought a Wraith in purple breakout about four years ago. Very wide edge geometry with a lot of steel behind it. I sanded a hell of a lot of the battleworn finish and took a lot of metal off the blade with a Worksharp in my effort to fix the edge geometry. I recommend examining the blade on a Heretic knife in person for what they cost.
