Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but does anyone remember the old Herters Improved Bowie? Their catalog was pretty neat, and had lot`s of good reading in it. One thing George Herter was sure good at was advertising, everything he sold was "the best", according to him. From duck calls, to guns, (anyone remember the 401 Herter`s Powermag?), to knives, nothing else compared to his. I came across an original, and decided to make my own version of the Herters Improved Bowie.

Here is an original Improved Bowie I stumbled across a few years ago in a small resale shop, along with a Herters duck call, and a book written by George Herter.

Here is my version of the Improved Bowie. It`s specs are the same as the original. The handle is walnut.

Here are the original and mine together.

A very well executed homage sir (actually quite a bit nicer!). I was not aware of this design or indeed any of Mr Herter's works.
Am guessing he was a hunter/sportsman of sorts. That blade certainly looks like it would handle itself at preppign feather and fur alike.

Will you be rounding off the finger groove any?

I must say I've really enjoyed looking at some of your work (reading your posts and others) of late.
Your work is inspiring me to get my butt back in the workshop!

Thanks

I will be rounding the handle more, and applying an oil finish to it.

Here it is after rounding the handle and applying the oil finish to the handle.

Nice work! I like it.
Seems like the name is a little bit of a stretch, though... Maybe he should have called it the Improved Paring Knife. ;)

Now that really looks better again.

Lovely to see it all curvy and oiled.

Great stuff sir.

Hi John -

Very nice! That would be another one that would be great in the 1/16" - looks like a great slicer.

I really like that oiled walnut scale treatment too - thanks for the pictures!

best regards -

Lest you not forget this one.
BTW. I thought I remembered the Herter's improved Bowie had a small hump on the blade just behind the handle.

The newer ones had the hump, the original was the straightback. Nice photo, thanks for posting it.

I just got a knife exactly like the on pictured and was wondering if you could give me any information such as year, value, or any other information you may have. Thank you.

Both the "bowie" and the Canadian pattern knives were made by R. Murphy Knives. They still make them in both carbon and stainless minus the Herter's logo. They also make the "bull cook" knife which is a little smaller than the bowie. All of the models are relatively inexpensive.
