Hinderer Pen?

Hey everyone!

So I always carry a pen with me, but have been rethinking my EDC lately; I am trying to condense what I carry and still be able to perform the same tasks. I currently carry a folding knife, a Countycomm Embassy Pen, and a Gerber rescue cutter with glass breaker. I figured if I got a pen that could also break glass, my knife could do the job of cutting a seatbelt, and I could eliminate the need to EDC the rescue tool. So here is the question:

Is the Hinderer Extreme Duty Pen able to break glass? I would either get the brass or the aluminum. What about the smaller investigator pen? Any thoughts?

I am not interested in the UZI brand pens and the other copies like them; they look way too tactical and I want something that will last a long time and take a beating when the time comes.

I love my Investigator and my Maxpedition Micro wallet. I'm not sure I'd rely on the pen for a glass breaker. I'd also advise against the cheap "tactical" pens, they are poor quality and it feels like you are carrying a brick in your pocket when you have it on you. If you are super worried about needing to break glass then carry a glass breaker in the console of your car, an automatic center punch from any tool store would work fine for such a task and they are cheap. Plenty of water here in FL but I don't have power windows in my beater so I'm not too worried about it, I could roll the window down and swim to safety if necessary. In my wife's car however she has one of the Res-Q-Me tools which is a combination seatbelt cutter and glass breaker (essentially a center punch) attached to a piece of paracord in the console so it doesn't go flying in an emergency.

I've never seen a glass breaker made out of brass or aluminum, have you?
So, I would think it wouldn't be efficient for breaking glass. And think about the threads on the pen and how thin they are. There's a good chance the pen would beyond use.
The investigator pen does not have enough weight to it to make a difference in a glass breaking situation.

I have had a brass investigator for 3 years. It is a good solid pen, that should last a lifetime as long as you don't lose it. It is however, quite small. I would not use it for self defense or try to break glass with it because very little if any of it stick out past my hand (I have large hands). If you could handle one, I would recommend it. If its big enough for you then Its a great pen, and for $60 - $80 it can be had in a variety of colors/materials including aluminum, SS, Copper, and Brass.

I carry that same wallet.
These pics may have just talked me into one of these pens...

Glad I could help...... or hurt...... whatever the case may be. It was definitely a happy coincidence that they fit so well together.

I'm not worried about being trapped myself, but as a responder, even off duty, I like to be prepared in case I come upon a scene.

Eye candy. :)

True. I tried breaking a simple piece of tempered glass with my investigator pen, it simply blunted the pen. :(
They work great as a pen though, not really a SD tool or glass breaking tool.

yeah unless it has a carbide tip, it won't work well to break glass.

I have a Benchmade 1101-2 with carbide tip and it has no problem breaking glass.

I don't see anywhere official that states the Hinderer pens should be used as glass breakers. And due to potential injury of hand/arm I'm not going to try it. However (when desired/situation dictates) on soft, fleshy parts these things can intentionally cause discomfort.

I have that same Benchmade Pen, unfortunatwly the carbide point didn't arrive with the pen. There is a hole in the butt of the pen. I need to send it back to Benchmade for repair or replacement. Does the carbide tip feel loose on yours? Like it will fall put or wobbly at all? I can't imagine how it fell out.

Mine is a few years old and the tip rock solid. There's some wear around the edges, but otherwise no play.

I posted about this Friday in the Benchmade forum, but the issue with mine is the cap. It's loose and it rattles :( I sent it back to Benchmade, and they replaced the o-ring in the cap, but it came back with the same issue :thumbdn:.
