I haven't owned or held an XM-24, but I've owned a custom XM-18 and a few production XM-18s. I've also come across the dilemma of pushing how much I'm willing to pay for a knife more times than I care to count. It's pretty clear that the XM-24 will do whatever you want out of a knife. Obviously don't get one if you're interested in lightweight slicers, but it'll cut whatever you want.
In my experience though, it's usually not about what you need, but what you like. And the feeling of worth is more about your own temperament than the knife itself, as long as it's a well made knife and meets other basic criteria that we rightly expect out of a quality knife. XMs are well made, so check that off of the list. Some questions that help me when dealing with this dilemma:
- What's my real purpose for this knife? Fidgeting while watching Netflix? Regular, prolonged cutting sessions? Using hard without worrying about the tip breaking? Self defense? Carrying a lot in the pocket only to cut open a box every once in a while?
- (if buying for using harder than opening a few boxes) Am I willing to actually use the knife if it comes down to it? (I have 2 or 3 that I won't use hard, but I'm honest with myself about it)
- If I don't like it and need to resell, am I okay with paying the price differential in order to try it out?
- Is this something I actually want and not something that scratches a very temporary itch?
