I'm wondering if anyone has compared Hinderer's use of these two steels. What's the read on pros and cons of the 45VN compared to 35VN from the same manufacturer?

I'm very interested in this topic, too, as I just purchased a Hinderer XM-18 3.5 in S45VN.

Maybe it will have a little more wear resistance or edge holding, but unless you use your knife constantly and sharpen it regularly I doubt there will be noticeable differences to the average knife person. It's probably just Hinderer upgrading their base steel with something that is slightly better that has a minimal or zero increase to cost.

About the same but s45vn being a little better assuming they’re still hitting 60-61. Hinderers s35 was already some of the best you could buy probably just got a little better

It is true that S45VN may be slightly more prone to chipping, though? I wouldn't think thin edges would be that much of an advantage, if that is true. I'm not saying that it is true, but that is what one sometimes reads and hears.

S45VN can also achieve higher hardness.
So in theory you can run the edge thinner.

Yea, but so far Hinderer has only released the Spanto blade in S45VN so that's kind of a moot point. :D
I’d like to know the measurements tbh I think the old versions were 35thou at the spanto portion and 25thou down the rest of the blade. Because their DLT fullered spearpoint is the newest Hinderer I’ve had and it’s thinner than any other XM-18 3.5” I’ve had. I’d like to see if there was a change but I think it’s unlikely

I have a DLT exclusive swedged spear point that's also quite thin behind the edge. It's far thinner than my Gen 5 Spanto or my Gen 4 Bowie. Without pulling it out and measuring, I'd say it's almost as thin behind the edge as my two skinnies. It could be that they have ground them a little thinner behind the edge with each new generation, or it could be the nature of the spearpoint, or the DLT exclusives.

All that aside, I was just poking fun at the fact that the Spanto grind isn't exactly known for its slicing ability.

I had a MP-1 in 35vn that was not great.for edge retention. I preferred their 20CV. Just wondering if 45vn is an upgrade over the 20cv.

Will be interesting to hear how new S45V owners and users like their knives but TRfromMT, I'm thrilled with Hinderer's 20CV - holds up amazingly well and doesn't seem to corrode.

I think it’s really hard to find real users of Hinderer knives in a 35vn, and even more hard to find real users of Hinderer in s45vn, so finding of users of both steels will be almost impossible quest :D
If seriously, with quite tough angle above the edge of Hinderer knives will be no big difference between this two steels :)

Personally I like thin edges. They cut better.

But depending on how you use your knife you may want a thicker edge. Its all a matter of personal preference.
S45VN is less tough than S35VN, so yes It could be more prone to chipping. But according to @Larrin s chart it is only minimally less tough. Should still make an excellent EDC steel.

Think an American ELMAX with finer grain size and hardenability.

I have users in S35VN and M390 but own no Hinderers in S45VN. I actually prefer the S35VN over their M390, I have had a few chips in their M390 but no issues in their S35VN. As has been stated already the S45VN may be a bit more prone to chipping than S35VN so for my uses it really has no advantage. If you are fairly mild in your cutting tasks the S45VN may be a better choice as many prefer the M390. All kind depends on your uses and needs.

I actually like a thinner edge also and that does play into how my Hinderers have performed.
