This Chinese 4-knife set appears to be flying off the shelves at Amazon: ...product/B015W9FHQA

Claimed to be a laminated carbon steel core with outer SS 'skins' - at $5 each I at least they would be good for helping me improve my terrible free-hand sharpening skills.

Under a 40X scope, the factory edges did indeed look truly terrible. But after a bit of 1000/6000 stone work - they started to look a lot better. Plus, the initial edge did not even seem to be exposing the carbon steel core for the edge. Afterward, I do seem to see a definite line between the edge steel and the cladding - with the edge steel 'grayer' as you would expect. (I tried to use 15 degrees).

The smallest Petty-type one seems to cut great. How long he edge will last? Who knows. The handles aren't bad, either.

A cladded carbon steel Japanese style knife for $5? Where else at anywhere near the price...

Comments, experiences, whatever - greatly appreciated!

Hi...please don't link to Amazon as it's considered "deal spotting" and against the rules.

Take some of your owns pics and post them up and let's talk about these knives.

Sorry Morrow. . I apologize. I have no commercial interest in seeing these knives sold - and unfortunately not the equipment to record the 40x images (cheap child's scope). Not intentionally 'deal spotting' - just thought to give readers how to get the info I - based on, right or wrong, that I bought on.

And to see if anyone else - who had already bought them - had similar or different experiences..

You're good...no worries all at. I would say use them and let us know how they hold up. I'm actually a bit curious now how these $5 laminated knives perform.

"Hiroshi Nakamoto" knives appears to me to be a business venture with an address in Wyoming that apart from using a Japanese name for a brand and selling Japanese styled knives manufactured in China, has absolutely nothing to do with Japan or the Japanese cutlery industry.

They give a speech about a "Hiroshi Santoku" (looks like his last name is a blade design..lol) whose ancestors put the Imperial Chrysanthemum symbol on swords. The only real such bladesmiths that I am aware of is the house of Kiku Ichi Monju of Nara. "Kiku" means Chrysanthemum.
Nothing is mentioned of the steel that they use, other than to declare that their "three layer blade" is better than others.
Seems they've never heard of "Kasumi" or even "Sanmai" before.

So I hit the website link and my computer promptly has a virus alert and goes into cleaning mode. Not a very good sign about these knives. :)

You needed a virus scanner to tell you that?:D
