Have only seen Bowie with swedge more or less on the spine side where the clip is.

If the originals were mainly a combat knife were they sharp on the clip?

Some accounts say yes, some accounts say no. I seem to recall reading a description, purportedly from Rezin Bowie, that the Sandbar Fight knife was a large clip-point butcher knife, with a sharpened clip, and no guard. But while everyone wanted a 'knife like Bowie's', few knew that Rezin Bowie was actually the designer, and marketer, of the knives, and that there were several versions of "Bowie" knives with different features.

The truth is that no one knows, and likely no one will ever know, just what a BOWIE knife is supposed to look like. Don't get too hung up on this. THOUSANDS of people have, over almost 2 centuries. Some have devoted their entire lives to unraveling the mystery. And we still don't know. Personally, I think a fighting Bowie should have a sharpened clip. A survival Bowie, I don't feel it necessary. YMMV.
