Does anyone know in what year the Ontario RAT-1 was launched?
Searching the Internet seems to point to 2001/2002, but that is just an educated guess.
Anyway, that would mean the knife‘s design is (almost) 20 years old. And still popular and selling. Amazing!

Here is some info.

Ontario Knives: RAT, Randall's Adventure and Training Knives

In 2002, the Ontario Knife Company entered into an exclusive collaboration with Randall's Adventure and Training Team (RAT). Randall's Adventure and Training (RAT) is a professional survival training, expedition guiding, and outdoor gear research team based in Alabama, with operations in Latin America. RAT is a legal U.S. representative of the Peruvian Air Force school of jungle survival.
The RAT team, formed by Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin, is considered a leading authority in the research, testing, and design of remote adventure and survival gear. RAT and the Ontario Knife Company have partnered up to produce a series of knives for hard-core adventurers, civilians, and professional soldiers around the world. RAT knives have served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and many non-publicized conflicts around the globe.

and a fun review of the Rat 1 Knife

Great, thanks! Now, knowing it was 2002, I found the info on KnivesPlus.com...

I have a 1 & 2 in D2 and they are great knives, and really great for the price range.
You can spend more easily but you get diminishing returns very quickly.
From a strictly practical point of view, it's hard to buy anything else in size range.
