While I am a firm believer in making history as opposed to watching it I have something to admit . I am enthralled by the captivating subjects proffered by the history channels . There was a show on the Trebuchet (really big rock slinger) that was fantastic . While I was not impressed with the first projectile being a musical instrument , (upright piano) I did have to be impressed on how far the operator could throw his weight around .
I,m not here especially to talk about King Eddy long legs (Edward longshanks) or his siege on just about everything he could see .
It was the " Great wheel Lathe " used on the show to round up the axles for the giant chucker they made . A description may do it justice, I cannot .
These boys rough turned a tree trunk into an axle that had to endure fantastic weight , pressures and proabably quite the bit of side torque as well . To give you an idea of the forces involved pick up a two hundred pound rock (yeah right ) Chuck it as far as you can . When you stop screaming from crushing your toes, measure the distance . For the average of us lets put her right about six inches and thats only cause it glanced off our head on the way down , if the liars among us said they actually got it over their heads . L:O:L
Now multiply that teste cracking force 1400 times and you get an idea that this thing had to be built right the first time .
It is sad that this wonderful backyard amusement had to service such an oppressive boor . (My apologies to all that bow to the longshanks ! )
Personally I would never take my eyes off him long enough to bow before Him ! L:O:L
