Hey guys, today arrived my christmast present:
an amazing caly3 super blue, It went directly to the pocket and later I had to cut some thick cardboard at work. It came pretty sharp as always with spyderco but, even with the thin grinds, I like to see what the steel was capable of. So a little music, DMT 3 stone set and two double sided JWS and went from this:

to this after DMT coarse and Fine

and finally after 1000, 3000 and 8000 plus strop with fleshcut gold:

the Steel takes a nice polish and the edge bite into the fingerprints like no other steel I own (maybe VG-10??)
I'm very impressed with the keeness of the edge.
Well done again Spyderco and Hitachi.

Let's see how the edge retention goes and then I'll update.

Love aogami the superblue in my caly 3.5 . So keen and holds a great edge. Im currently carrying a Higonokami in aogami ( not super ) to play with the steel. I gave it a quick sharpen and it was screaming.

Excellent steel with reasonable toughness at very low bevel angles. Easy to sharpen to pass the HHT if that matters to you.

Rusts readily though, so get use to a patina or keep it oiled.

I'm used to patinas because I carry everyday some sort of traditional and love the look of used carbon steel.
Actually I shave with straight razor and you could shave your face with the caly altough is a 3 on the HHT It grabs and splits the hair, so It won't be comfortable :o

Definitely love the edge it takes

Another vote here for the steel. I got a couple of the 3.5's, the one I use, I received sharpened on a wicked edge and its laser beam. I'm maintaining it but when its time I'll run it on my edge pro full monty and see where that takes me. Heard it sharpens super easy also.

For you guys who like the steel or would like to try it, Spyderco is slated to release a number of popular models in SB this year. I'm looking forward to it. The Caly3 SB sprint is trickling out now!

I remember seeing your vid awhile back Trav, short and sweet!

I don't really know but eyeballing I'd say 10-12 dps
Between 20-25 inclusive angle but is not exact.

Fcm, actually the knife on the pics is the new caly 3, I received it yesterday.

Yeah I know, what made you think I didnt! Hey I pay attention :p They're the same thing really, I'm happy with my 3.5's though.

Hey guys, first Edge report:
I've been using the caly3 as my only knife for a week now cutting all kinds of stuff from cardboard to food, wood, etc. and so far it only needed a light stropping.
Today something get stuck in the gap between my car window and the door and used the tip of the knife for getting it out, I hit the glass and damaged about 1/3 of the edge by rolling it. I could see then some light reflecting from the edge.
Perfect time to try some emergency repair, I took a large kitchen knife with a hard stainless steel and used the spine as a steel at first the square part but then it needed more work so I used the corner of the spine until the edge doesn't reflect light anymore, then I stropped it on a cardboard box .
Now is razor sharp again, as said before I love this high performance carbon steel
Se you guys

My Aogami Super Blue Mule team is still wrapped in paper in the box having never decided what kind of handle I wanted to put on it. I have a Aogami White San Mai knife (Murray Carter) so I had an idea how special the Super Blue would be, but it wasn't until the Caly 3.5 came out that I really came to appreciate it.

I recently bought another 3.5 user that I have been carrying all week, which is something I rarely do. That one is somewhat convexed and all I have done is some quick work on on loaded strops mostly to remove edge oxidation. After a magnified look at the edge it still needs lots of work, but it is amazing how well it cuts in spite of that. My other is about 15 degree free handed on waterstones and is a tree-topper.

I have also found that Super Blue is more likely to roll than chip unlike Hitachi's ZDP-189. My Caly 3 SB came in the mail this week, so I'm in Super Blue heaven right now.

Hey guys, a little update on this wonderful steel.

It's been with me almost 6 months now, I used it quite a bit and It behaves very well.
Until now I have mantained the edge with a ceramic rod and a strop, didn't have to go back to the stones, maybe in the next couple of weeks because now there is a little spot that keep reflecting very little light after the spa treatment.
This spot I think was caused whittling some hard wood with a lot of knots. (the S30V of my Para2 actually chipped performing this task, although never happened again, so maybe the edge was burnt from factory buffing)
The steel holds the shaving edge longer than S30V, but then dulls faster. S30V holds a decent working edge much longer.
The knife is great for urban EDC, but It has some cons:
- the gray G-10 get awfully dirty

- the back lock developed a little blade play, but I think that tightening the pivot It will come back to complete solidness

and a little weird patina thing, mirror spyderco tang stamp hehe.

see you guys

my 3.5 also does this at the tang, i guess they treated the pivot area, with some kind of rust protection, tuff glide like. the separation between the patina and the shiny area on mine is too crisp to be natural.

Can somebody please school me on what Super Blue steel is? What is it nearest to, RC, and such. I cant find jack about it. Thanks for the help.

Hey mate,
this steel is also known as Aogami super (AS), It's a carbon steel with about 1,4-1,5% of carbon and V,W,Cr and others into the composition. It's used mostly in high quality japanese kitchen knives, and is known for taking a very keen edge and holding it reassonably good.
Usually its hardness is left about 61-62Hrc, but in some specific knives reaches 65.
If you search the web for Aogami super you have more information.
As a curiosity, I think the naming blue and white steels is from the color of the packaging in which it comes from the factory.
