I am creating a comic book character and I really want him to carry a few Spyderco's. What do you guys picture a hitman carrying? I was thinking a BG-42 Military, a Civilian and a Cricket for backup. Thoughts?

Tom

I think you would be doing a disservice to us all creating a character called hitman and carrying a knife. Let alone a identifiable knife.

I Couldn't Agree more. Please do not do spyderco the Disservice of associating some of the best working knives available with a character called "hitman"

What? I don't get it.
It's "cool" if a Spyderco is seen in a movie, even used by bad guys to stab people, but in a comic book it's bad publicity?
What am I missing where comic books elicit more negative press than big-budget movies?
Or was Hannibal a nice guy, and that's why it was "cool" that he used a Civilian and a Harpy?
Seriously people, what gives???

Are you implying that Sal Glesser approved of the usage of his knife? I didn't think he did...

IMO, it is not 'cool' to portray any negative use of a knife in the public media. Perhaps realistic positive uses of knives will help to portray knives as the tools they are, rather than the weapons they could be, when used by criminals.

Not at all, just that it was not out of the ordinary for people to point out this or that Spyderco in a movie and others to think it cool. Usually no one says it is a bad reflection on the knife owning public or anything for a fictional character to use a particular brand of knife, even in the commision of fictional evil.
It's just stories. The same goes for a comic book.

IF the OP was seeking official Spyderco sanction, then that's a totally different matter, and one I have no say or opinion on.

But with this reasoning we end up with no action movies since we don't want guns portayed badly, or knives in a negative light. We would deny ourselves entertainment out of pandering to the fears of those who don't know better.
We SHOULD have many decent, moral building stories as well, but to worry about the portrayal of guns and knives in popular entertainment seems to be giving too much power to those who don't like such things.

I'm sorry..... but does anything about this particular knife (My favorite Spyderco model btw) seem like a knife not meant to intimidate, and be used strictly in a self defense type situation?

If you dont want certain spyderco knives in the hands of criminals and tough guy types, fictional or not, don't design them like this.

This knife isn't meant to whittle pencils.

The sad reality is that it is the average 'John Q Public' that ultimately votes for gun control, knife limits, etc., as well as making it illegal in many places, to defend yourself with deadly force if necessary. I fear that negative portrayal of knives in the movies, will lead to even more restrictions. Somewhere there must be a middle ground.

P.S. - The Civilian pictured above was designed as a last ditch weapon for law enforcement.

I hear you. What burns me is when the papers start making a sensation out of stabbings and shootings. They should just report the facts, and not try to make trends appear where there aren't any, but it sells papers and gets viewers. Unfortunately, the same scare tactics which get ratings scare people, and we end up with the stupid restrictions we have.
I think it's more the fault of how the media in general reports things than that of the entertainment world.

I think you might be over reacting. When I saw that the Joker had a Delicia 2 SS it totally made me want one. One of the most infamous fictional serial killers Hannibal Lechter carries and uses to great effect a Spyderco harpy. I would give my character a VG10 Endura because it is a great knife and the FRN version is only 50$ so if you need to toss it the cost is not an issue. A waved version might even be better. The Stainless Police makes a great
concealed weapon. I like the serrated version because it is so wicked looking and makes a great fighter that fits in a small package. It would also look great in a comic.

In the latest Gravel comic by Warren Ellis the hroe kills a couple guys with a Buck Strider
fixed blade.

You can't really make knives designed as weapons and then complain that they are being portrayed unfairly when they are used as weapons. I would like to see more realistic combat in comics etc. Like the Chinook3 being used for a snap or back cut for example.
