Wilst checking out the imports at the liquor store last night I spotted a bottle of Hofbrau Munchen. Ales and Lagers are my kind of thing when I want to splurge for a treat and this was some good beer.

Did a Google translation and came up with "Yard Brew." It was a nice yellow-gold in color, but other than that I can't find any particulars on what it is, how it is made and all that.

Anyone ever tried it before?

The Münchner (Munich) Hofbräuhaus is the world's most famous Biergarten. Biergartens are old fashioned Bavarian bars where they serve mainly beer, pretzels and Weißwurst with sweet mustard.

I guess you could say that the Hofbräuhaus is the leather trouser-wearing farmer's Studio 54. :D

Actually, most Bavarians do not wear these traditional leather trousers anymore...unless it's Oktoberfest time of course.

Hofbräu would be best translated as "Royal Brew", that means that they used to be the King of Bavaria's official beer purveyor.
As all German beers, it is brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (beer law). This law was introduced in Bavaria in 1516 (it has been officially replaced by the German beer law which AFAIR is pretty much identical), it is one of the world's oldest food regulations.

Munchen is Bavarian for Munich which I would guess is where it is brewed.

See if your world beers importer does Echu 28, but hold on to your hat as it is about 9%.

Courvoisier cognac!

You should be drinking Bank's Mild or M&B Brew 11 :)

I was born at Marston Green Maternity Hospital and spent my life up to 19 in Shirley. I sold the house after mother died in 1997. I also went to Birmingham College of Food from 1969 to 1971.

We have a Hofbrauhaus across the river in Newport, KY. It's a great place to go as long as I can sit far away from the "Oompa" band. Great beer, great German food, and the women all wear the traditional biergarten outfit. I don't find the music offensive, but I would rather talk to the people I'm with than get a sonic assault from a tuba and try to scream over top of it.

I believe it may be the only official Hofbrauhaus in the USA, but I'm not sure. There are lots of German Americans in this area.

Edited to add- OK it isn't the only Hofbrauhaus in America. I just looked at the website. The other one is apparently in Las Vegas, which may as well be its own country.

I live in Shirley now.

If you haven't been back, you would scarcely believe the change in the beer scene in the last 20 years. The breweries have sold many of their tied pubs and the remainder are allowed by law to sell at least one guest ale. Hand pulled real ale is widely available - it was virtually non-existent when I was young.

German beers are hard to beat, IMO. When I was over there in the 60s, our favorite (there are thousands of breweries) was Wurzburger Hoffbrau. We were stationed outside of Wurzburg, so naturally it was a popular local brew.

A few years ago, Anheuser-Busch announced they had struck a deal to import and distribute this brand, but alas, the deal fell through. I content myself with the readily-available Warstiener or Bitburg.

Nah, no need to apologize...I just found it funny that you referred to "Bavarian" as a language. ;)
