I have a lot more time on my hands since I decided to blow off work and retire early.
I have been slipping out West more and more and have discovered what a lot of you already know about living in the mountains..and the freedom that goes with that.

My last trip all I had with me was a Springfield Scout Rifle and coming from 500' above sea level and going to 10,000' that heavy boy kicked my butt, so enter the Ruger Scout Rifle.

It showed up today @ 7lb, it's a .308 and has a forward scope mount for a low power scope or red dot.
It is very quick and light, handles very fast and points true.
The main use will be for hunting Hogs, the wild kind not you guys ;)

My back up is a Casull .454 with a 9 1/2" Magna Ported Barrel hung from a Kenny Rowe Western Rig, I also have a 1894 Stainless in .454 that I carry at times, but I like the extra range that the .308 gives me.

My next guns will be a Kal Tec Shotgun and the Kal Tec PMR 30 for back pack guns.

I think I can get into this not working thing... :) :) ;)

So, what do you guys use and carry when you are out and about?

PS. for Busse content I carry the Busse's I posted in the Machete thread when I'm out on the road.

Gonna do a custom scout on my little .260 remington but i'd rather get another rifle!

Sweet score and glad you like it. I have been looking for another .308 to compliment my Savage 99 and FNAR but I forgot all about the ruger scout rifle. Thanks for reminding me!

You'll love the PMR-30 whenever you get one so here is some obligatory Busse content remedy. :p

Oh, and Chuck, if you ever find yourself in western Montana, near Missoula, feel free to look me up and I can show you around.

I usually carry a ruger bisley 44/40 and a old marlin 1894 in 44/40. Easy to carry light weight and with handloads very potent on hogs and deer. I do alot of my hunting and moving through the woods on horseback and its just easier to pack a carbine for me.

Here is my trail buddy magic taking a break

I do like the look of the Ruger...but I would be hard pressed to stop carrying this... Sako AII Action, McMillan Stock, Tobler Barrel, Leupold 2.5-8 in Leupold Rings.... it seems to work OK on swine.... ;) :)

We have a huge Hog problem down here. I killed one Saturday evening with my 7 Mag then another yesterday evening. I have killed many with both Shotgun and Rifle. I have killed the most at onetime (4) with a 12 gauge with 000 Buckshot. The most I have killed with a rifle at onetime was (2) that were lined up. The thing I believe would help me the most, besides a Mini Gun, would be a silenced rifle that is extremely quite. I have no experience with silencer's so don't know exactly how quite they can be. Maybe someone with experience can chime in.

"Out and about" these days with my back problems usually means "in the truck." I keep a Ruger Mini 14 and a Marlin 1894
.44 magnum carbine in the truck, and whatever vehicle I am in I have a .45 ACP (Dan Wesson CCO or SIG GSR), and on my person a Kimber Solo.

When actively hunting, my current favorite is a Merkel KR1 in 6.5x55. For 40 years it was a .30-06 Model 70, but my opthamologist recommended reducing recoil level due to me having a high risk of getting a detached retina. Gotta make these accomodations to age because the alternative, quitting hunting, is unthinkable.

The .44 magnum BFR Shorty is for just general woods roaming, and the fishing gun is a Browning Hi-Power Practical in .40 S&W.

Heck, why not just admit it. What we are all doing is finding excuses to buy more guns and knives! A couple of years ago I was telling my wife about a gun I had taken a liking to but it was a little too expensive for me to justify, and she said, "You are 63 years old. If you don't do it now, when are you going to do it?" So I said, "Yes mam!"

I don't hunt as much as I did before my back surgery, but I like my Remington 660 in .308 with my S&W Mountain Gun in .45LC for backup.

The Remington is light but packs a pretty good wallop! :D

I have been carrying a Ruger Lightweight 77 in 250 savage to the woods for the last 25 yrs. Haven't had anything walk away from it yet.

Talk to these folks about thier 7.62 x 40 they love to kill hogs with suppressed rifles in this round. If you are an AR guy all it takes is a barrel switch which any gunsmith or armorer can do. http://www.wilsoncombat.com/762x40WT.htm

I have been looking for a hog/back up deer gun and am thinking real hard about building at least an upper the above caliber. Since we can't hunt with a rifle here in Ohio it is hard to justify the $ though. I have been wanting a Remington 7600 pump rifle in .308 for years and think this year might be the time to get one.

I to have two sets - stand rifles and carry rifles. All my stnad rifles are 10lbs+ Big glass and set up to sit in the corner of the blind until needed. These are really made for shooting, not hunting. Let's face it, I have gotten to a point that with a little practice, my old eyes and the technology. If I can see it with my naked eye, I can kill it. So I really am just shooting not hunting out of a set up blind. Now my hunting rigs are all lightweight, between 7.5lbs and 6 lbs glassed and ready to go. Favorite is a Rem Model 7 18.5" barrel in 308 with Nikon monarch 3x9x40- pencil barrel but deadly accurate with 168 Horandy Amax. Taken well over 100 heads with this one. Next that I hunted with this year entire year, a stainless TC Encore with a heavy Bullberry custom barrel 20" in 308 with Swarovski 3x9x42. This one love Horandy 150 SST's. Either rifle is paired with a S&W snubby in 357 airweight with rat shot for first chamber. I have found a sling that really helps, used in in New Mexico anad Wyoming on hunts, takes 30% of the weight of the rifle off your shoulder and is wonderfull for rentention when you use the sling to tighten up your shooting stance is from Slogan Outdoors. Well worth the $, made in USA and has lasted my 10+ years so far. If removing some of the perceived weight(what you actually feel while carrying) from your rifle is goal I strongly recommend this sling. Sling is a rubber compund so it has some stretch and is very grippy on the shoulder. It will not slide off.

I shot with a remington 22-250 this week at it was crazy fast with no recoil. not sure how heavy a load you need for a hog but my uncle killed a moose 3 weeks ago with it. this gun is super fast. almost fake like a video game to be honest. The most beautiful gun I have held. the 308 is a tried tested and true rifle and im not sure you need a change from that. also the 30.06 is another option. my uncle uses them both for seals and moose so they are very versatile.

Yup. Headshot. My uncle, "I wasn't making much noise, (modest..he is as stealthy as a ninja) and when i clicked the safety I was so close he flinched. But it was too late by then"

He's the guy I bought the scrap Muk for. He deserves and appreciates it.

Hogs are a nuisance. They outnumber us, most of the time. There are only a few configurations I consider truly efficient HOG killing platforms.

My go-to is the AR platform. I prefer 5.56, but the bigger rounds work well too. Why the AR? Light-weight, maneuverable, quick, dependable, accurate, and 30-rds of hell to unleash. The Goal? Hunt them on the ground...because if you're sitting in a stand waiting, you can follow the moving targets as easily. Hog hunting from the ground, with a red-dot optic, is extremely exciting and it is some of the best training for fast moving target acquisition on multiple targets that I can think of. I love it.

The AK also works well.

I only take the bolt .308 when I want to employ >200 yd shots (and ideally, much further).
