greetings,
anybody have an idea why makers/manufacturers put holes in blades? my kershaw boa for instance. great knife but what's the purpose? imho, they just take away the clean look. thanks and best to all.

Depending on where the holes are placed, they can improve the grip on the blade - if that matters. Otherwise they are simply decorative. My Red Horse Hell Razor has them, if I want to open the knife with two hands the holes help a little. I find them an okay decoration.

It depends.

It can be for function (as is the case for most Spydercos), to reduce weight and/or just for looks.

Spyderco had a patent on the functional "Spydiehole" in most of its blades. The patent ran out but the tradition continues and Spyderco still puts hole in its blades, even if unnecessary (as is the case w/their automatic and fixed blades), but they've never done that w/their balis.

For the Boa, it seems to be just for looks.

I have a skrama that they put a hole in to keep it straight when they are making it or something.

The 3 holes are a Kershaw/Ken Onion thing.

Agreed but the only Kersahaw/Onions that I've ever seen w/the 3 hole blade pattern are in the Boa (full size and baby) and in the Scallion.

There are also 3 tiny holes in the flipper tab of the Kershaw/Spec & Speed Bump and the Offset. Onion also liked putting holes (more than 3) in the larger stylized clips on the Baby Boa, Spec/Speed Bumps, Offset and Tyrade.

Don't recall seeing a 3 hole pattern in any ZT/Onion or CRKT/Onion blades but the 3 hole pattern is repeated in the Spyderco "Spyker" which was a Spydero/Kerhaw/Onion collaboration.

You can also improvise a draw knife with it.

As far as the holes in the blade on the Boa, they seem purely decorative. And an awesome place for cheese or peanut butter to get stuck. Which may be a feature, depending on your lifestyle. ;)
