Hollow Grind Height Calculation

Hey everyone.

I intend to do a lot of hollow grinding and was researching the height of the grinds based on the diameter of the wheel and thickness of the stock.

I have come across a few charts/tables showing different heights for the same parameters.

Using this : http://dcknives.com/public/grind_angle_concave.php

and the formula from it I deduct that it gives the perfect calculation from the very edge of the stock (or where the cutting edge will be ground from) to the maximum height the wheel can offer.

Now obviously you can keep grinding upwards but will be left with a very flat space on the grind right after the cutting edge.

My question is if it will only affect the strength of the blade (and weight) because extra material is removed or will there be other negative effects from grinding too high?

I hope my question is presented well enough to understand :)

Some blades are hollow ground from edge to spine. Doing that by eye with a contact wheel smaller than needed to get it one one pass takes some skill at blending the curve, but it is done all the time.
I have an 8 inch wheel, I am not what I consider good at making knives, but I have hollow ground many knives eyeballing it. I actually find it easier to hollow grind, but hand sanding is a little more complicated.

hello, welcome to the forum. i do not think hollow grinding up to the spine will have any bad effects.
