I happen to love hollow handle knives....well certainly not all!
There is so much junk out there, you can fill 10 landfills!

I happen to collect GOOD hollow Handle knives! And only GOOD hollow handle knives. I relize that many knife lovers hate 'em.

1. Weak point between the handle and blade
2. Sawback

5. Aitor Jungle King I (silver)
6. Aitor Jungle King III
7. Buck Buckmaster 184
8. Al Mar Survival
9. Hackman Finland
10.United Cutlery Rambo (I know it's crap but hey...)

Awaiting:

Bill Sanders Survival (formerly Timberline) (on order)

Klotzli Survival (on order)

Any other suggestions for other great hollow handles?

I happen to LOVE GOOD hollow handle knives. I've used them and none have broken! NEVER! HARD USE, bring it on! Most reputable hollow handle makers provide a lifetime guarantee on their hollow handles. So IF it broke, send it back and get a new one. No biggie!

I like knowing I have a mini-kit in the handle. Handle can be used to catch/collect water/ rain water to drink (survival remember?) Do I only count on that mini-kit to save my bacon? NO! I happen to carry an Altoids kit with me, seperately. But I take comfort knowing IF I lost my pack/Survival stuff, I have something as a backup. "Something is better than nothing!" That's being prepared!

Yes, there is crap out there! But hollow handle knives are here to stay. Rambo has come and gone (although Ive heard they are going to make a Rambo 4 movie -Yikes!) But count me in on the hollow handle.

I'll put my trust and life on a GOOD hollow handle knife and the stuff in the handle.

I didn't know that there was a hollow handled Hackman out there. I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of that. I have a lot of respect for many of the Scandinavian cutlery makers.

I hope you didn't order that LS1 from Jack himself.

You definitely have a nice collection, but I personally have never cared for hollow handle knives. They just don't turn my crank.

I have never handled one, but have heard good things about the Bill Sanders hollow handled survival knives. Excuse me if that is who you meant when you listed Bob Sanders.

"Sheath-mounted stone, and matches, a compass, a needle, thread, fishing hooks, line, and weight, all hidden in the handle. It's constructed with a 440 stainless-steel blade and a CNC aluminum alloy handle..."

I was in Big-5 last month and bought one of these (with a longer 10" blade) for $14.00. I have absolutely no idea why, except it looked kinda' wicked (hollow handle for whatever, nylon sheath, nice feel...)

*sigh*

I guess I can always dig out dandelions and pop off hubcaps with it- lol.

"Something is better than nothing!"

Agreed.

Edit: Design by Dalton Combat Cutlery, ("Handcrafted" in China...)

once I get forging I've got an idea I'd really like to try of making a hollow handle knife out of a single piece of steel and turning it, then making up a die and forging the handle to a more ergonomic shape. I like hollow handles but I don't like the roundness of the handle.

The Cold Steel Bushman is hollow handled, but it doesn't have a screw on end cap. For $30-$40 it's worth trying out.

The CRKs are the only ones that interest me, and not as hollow handle knives, but as Chris Reeves

My first knife ever was a hollow handle, a few steps above true "junk" status, and I have drooled over Chris Reeve's stuff, it seems he is at the pinnacle with the styling not to mention forging everything from a solid bar.

But it seems there is a tradeoff, not so much in the strength at handle/blade (granted that IS a big problem with the real junk) but in the weight/feel and point of balance. Almost all hollow handles are round/cylindrical, whereas few knives not making the compromise for a hollow handle are. Even the Kabar etc are at least a LITTLE eliptical, it fits the hand better.

And I am curious, has anyone actually USED the stuff in a hollow handle knife for an emergency? Maybe it's just me, I am a city boy, there are not many times I am ever going to use a bunch of tiny fishhooks.

And let's not get into the idea of stuffing a stick into the hollow handle and lashing it down to make a spear, if I am really in the bush and this is all the blade I've got I sure as hell am not going to tie it to a stick and poke stuff--can you say lopst or broken knife? I would use the knife to MAKE a spear, hello.

I've used hollow handled knives for years partly because they were the fashion so when I was 14 I had an explora with the diddy slingshot built into the sheath. then I progressed to a buck184 copy till I managed to get the real thing as few years later - all it had was matches in the handle so I guess thats usefull enough. I've experimented with different handle packings and also covered the nasty knurled finish with cycle innertube to make it hand friendly Ive also filed the sharp edges down a little. the sheath has a gerber 600 strapped to it and I've taped tin foil for cooking and a wire saw under the fastex buckle. I'm seriously thinking about removing the rope cutter serations like I did to the copy I've got - I've never found a use for the handle spikes though.

handle wise - I moulded a mini candle into the cap and the body has a sewing/fishing/firelighting setup - not an ideal survival kit but handy enough if I have nothing else.

Knife wise I'll be honest in that as a civvy I maybe find less use for what is basically a very sharp prybar but I love the thing and make it work for me. As to whether they are up for the task when I get a new knife I have a habit of trying to destroy the old one at worst I snapped a blade halfway down and had to re-epoxy a handle on when the old stuff crumbled. If I had to 'bug out' as they say then I'd pick the buck up as I could dig through walls with it if I had to :)

as to lashing it to a stick - I was taught that a knife is a tool used to make other tools.

Love the CRK versions. The only modification would be to shape the handle into more of an oblong/eliptical shape, but I'm not sure how you'd get the endcap on??

You are really excited about the hollow handle knives! ;)

I'm pretty sure the Cold Steel Bushman has a hollow handle, and it gets good reviews from what I've read.
