Lately I've seen commercial ads for "Self Sharpening" kitchen knives by "Calyphon" very clever short few seconds ads showing kitchen knives being inserted into storage wooden blocks where they are being automatically sharpened by tiny little robots after each use!:cool:

Anyone seen them and bought them?
Do they self sharpen as advertised or are we being lied to by marketing BS?
Sounds to good to be true doesn't it?

Do you remember good old "Ginzu" knife infomercials, where they would spend 30 minutes cutting all kinds of materials to proof that their knives never get dull?
Now, I never owned them so I can't say if it was indeed type of knife steel that never gets dull or not, BUT I always thought they were made from some kind of hard tool steel that retained its edge for long time. So at least it was believable.

Now, these new self sharpening knifes with zero proof defies all belief!:grumpy:

PS would it not be cool if it was true and knifes could self sharpen themselves, especially kitchen knives????

Basically they include a small ceramic-rod V-type pull-through sharpener in the bottom of every knife slot. Gimmick for people who don't know how to or don't want to sharpen their knives. The sharpeners are in a removable metal plate that sits in front of/on top of the wood knife block.

You can learn all you want to know about them by using Google and searching using the actual brand name (Calphalon).

I would suggest the butcher block has a scraper style sharpener on a sprung inside.

The thought of a carbide sharpener running over my edge every time in pull a knife in or put it back in the block makes me shudder.

My mother in law would, however, love it!

I have a set of their pans that are quite good and holding up well. My beater kitchen knife is a Calphalon. It has lasted over 10 years and goes in the dishwasher. Not bad. Self sharpening block? No thanks.

Me too...

WTF, no tiny ninja like robots inside that wood block who sharpen the blades :eek::mad:
Those marketing liars!!!!
I want my money back!!!
Oh, wait it was just a dream I didn't actually buy it!!!
Whef!!

I'm sure it has the pull through crap.

I'm willing to bet most people won't even wipe their knife before use, which will have tiny bits of knife loose on he edge and blade.

I would be offended if someone bought that for me hah.

I also LOVE sharpening my own tools.

They will never be as sharp as a hand sharpened knife.

But most people are completely apathetic to having sharp knives.

As long as the can rip ingredients apart who cares.

Well, I do.

And if you want a sharp knife then don't fall prey to gimmicks.

I looked into this when I first saw the commercial, and it seems to have a steeling insert, not a carbide scraper or ceramic rods. Chips in the edge will never come out, and it has to be sharpened to a specific angle to take advantage of the steeling, but if you know somebody who cannot sharpen a knife but it not hard on them it is not a bad option.

On a related side note, I was at the supermarket the other day and saw a cheap brand (one of the many kitchen knife brands) chef knife with a carbide insert in the blade guard *cringe*
