Home made pricking irons

Hi Paul thanks for that interesting thread.

Years ago in the UK one could still obtain pricking irons which angled the stitches. These were used by a lot of the old time saddle makers. They had various numbers of irons to the inch depending on the work.
Do you know if these are still available?

Who currently produces the best tools?

Steven, it has been so long since I have hand stitched (lots of machines in my shop) the I would be hard pressed to even find my old pricking irons but I did have both angled and straight in singles and four gang.

Dixon used to make some really good quality picks, but I think I heard they have discontinued business altogether, or it may have been Verges-Blanchard.

As Paul mentioned or there's also Vergez Blanchard which sells in various numbers and spacings. Some retails sell as pairs (2 prong with any other # of teeth).

Not cheap

I actually have to build my own. I have to punch very small holes and nobody makes a punch that small and currently doing them by hand.

There are LOTS of companies making pricking irons that are much cheaper than VB. Wuta, David Long, Amy Roke, Crazy Cut, KS Bladepunch, Crimson Hides and others.
