I for one and tired of tin cans and paper.. I'm looking for something i can make at home and shoot over and over, that will also eather ping, or move when shot. Will only be using .22's on it. anyone have any ideas?

I have a set of 22 metallic silhouette targets. I welded a ring on top of them an put them on a bar. They'll move when you hit them and they will last a long time. You could use simple round or square targets the same way. 1/4" steel is what you need.

As long as you have a safe place to shoot (bullet splatter), any steel on a swinger will work. Be careful building too heavy or you will get no movement when you make a hit, however you will retain the ping.

Try some 1/8 inch steel discs hanging a few inches down on a thin rod. The silhouette targets are a good idea too.

Cheaperthandirt has some nice swinging metal targets at very reasonable prices. Ive got one that resets the swingers with a round and have shot thousands of round at it. I just give it a shot of WD-40 every 6 months or so.--KV

I keep chickens and every once in a while I'll find an egg that I'm unsure how long it's been sitting. They make very fun reactive targets for my .22 air rifle (especially the hollow points). It's all organic so no clean up necessary!

A buddy makes a moving one out of a T made from either 1x1 or lathe, then takes (well, guess they're old now) 35mm canisters, puts a hole in the bottom, pushes a string through, then ties to the arm of the T.

Hit the canister, it starts moving in an unpredictable way, and is quite challenging...

You could use old med bottles, or any small plastic bottle.

You could set up a 2x8 between two posts and hang several for a real challenge...

Golf balls hanging from string are fun. But a piece of steel about 1/4" thick should last a long time for you.

A dueling tree is a lot of fun although it's probably cheaper to buy that to make. When you hit a disc it swings to the opposite side. Two shooters can compete to try and get all of the discs swung to the opponent's side.

Exploding targets are fun. But you need to be out in the boonies cause they are loud. They are supposed to be legal but not sure how since they go high order. There are a few places to buy them but they can be made.

BOOM!

Not quite reusable, but I like to shoot at the 12 ga. hulls I find at the range. There's no doubt when you hit one. Golf balls are big fun, and they can last for dozens of shots. There's a place nearby where they sell used balls, $4 a dozen (don't buy brand new expensive ones.)

Toss a couple of clay pigeons up on the backstop and shoot them. Then pick off the fragments:thumbup:

Trick or Treaters. oops too late.

I was able to get a 5 target hanger for .22 for twenty dollars a couple of years ago.

Old cast-iron pan hung on a wire. Makes a very satisfying ping.

Awesome idea!! The Thrift store down the street had some old 4" to 6" Diameter Cast Iron frying pans last week for $5 each. Might have go run over and see if they are still there come pay day. :)

Hi,

I used to do a lot of Rendezvous back in the day. For those that have never been to one. It's a historical reenactment of the mountainman/longhunter eras. The shooting competitions were done with period muzzle loading weapons. Targets were almost always novelty types and shot at ranges from 25 to 100 yards. Always off-hand and only with open sights.

The most fun shoots were the salad shoots. Ain't nothing like massacring poor innocent veggies. Potatoes, baby carrots, olives and such. Snuffing out candles at dusk is fun. Cookies and all hard candies are a blast. Hang them from a string and let them swing in the breeze for extra added fun.

Most evil steel target, a 20" round steel plate with a 12" hole in the middle at 100 yards off hand. Instinct wants to shoot to center of mass which is a clean miss.

One I came up with we called "tickle your nuts". A three shot target. Consisting of a small cocktail flag taped to a turkey feather which was stuck in a hole drilled into a walnut. First shot had to take out the little flag without hitting the feather. Second shot had to cut the turkey feather. Last shot had to hit the walnut without barking the board the target was glued to.

Most evil target I ever saw and tried was a square frame with two pieces of rope, (one running vertical, one running horizontal), forming a cross in the center of the frame. Each rope suspended a weight. Object was to fire one shoot and cut each rope at the same time dropping the weights. Range was 25 yards. I was never able to do it. Though I did see several guys accomplish it.

Let your imagination for targets and presentations run wild. Just keep total safety first and foremost in your mind.

Just make sure they free-hang and can swing easily when hit. Don't want the fying pan to get revenge and fling a round back at you (unlikely but better safe than sorry).

A little more extreme than plinking with a .22, but hilarious. Notice at the end the guy says 'Nope, no more Iron!"

Thanks for the heads up!! I'll make sure that any Frying pan/steel targets are free hanging before shooting them. Looked to me like the bullet bounced off the ground before hitting him. Or maybe it hit him then bounced?
