Homemade power hammer plans

Jerry Allen's design is world famous! It is downright one of the simplest designs to build, and i have only ever seen one overall massive improvement on the backyard engineers(some are ACTUAL engineers too hehe) is the replacement of the somtimes expensive and hard to find pullies with a friction system the same as the tire hammers. My personal modification perhaps when i build mine will include a light tensioning spring to keep it in the UP position when not running, so that you can position the metal FIRST, then start the hammer, instead of trying to get the metal up inside before it tups back down. I built a treadle hammer sort of along the same lines as Jerry's hammer, with hopefully the powered version coming this spring or sooner if possible. I'llhave my hammer with me at Ashokan this year if anyone wants a closer look.

Overall veiw

I have a whole bunch of pictures from the build day if anyone is interested. i built the whole hammer from probably about $200-$300 worth of steel (if bought all from the steel supply place, i scrounged everything bt the 2 inch square 1/4 thick wall tubing) and some time. It took me 15 hours start to finish to build mine, I did it in one day.

Yup. It won't even come close to working hot steel as a power hammer of any size, but it works it a bit harder and less tiring than your arm can.

My "stomp" power can crusher, err hammer. =) They're great for things where you really need 3 hands, one to hold the hot metal, one to hold the tooling you're using (punch, drift, spring swage, whatever) and one to swing a hammer.

They hit hard, very hard.

I need to make new dies for mine though, right now all I have is flat top and bottom dies, and i can stick my bottom fuller in the holder in the bottom for one sided drawing.

Also, sam! didnt you know you're supposed to christen a treadle hammer with a can not a bottle !?

That is simply AWESOME!! I have tendinitis that acts up in my arm once and a while, this would make forging much easier on me. Thanks, can you post more pics?

Holy crap!! That thing is nuts.... I am amazed. It seems that you could retrofit it to a motor without too much hassle. Any thoughts about doing that to free up the foot?
