Does an oven or torch give the best coloring on hardware....screws, thumbstuds, bolsters, etc? Thanks

Depends on the surface preparation and what you call "BEST". Heat bluing will produce a good blue color, with a fairly even coloration. For darker blues and blacks, there are chemical treatments that work well.

an oven will be more even, and controllable. for parts as small as screws, they should be a pretty even color with either, although, a torch may heat too fast, you risk going right past blue and into grey. with bolsters a bit of playing with a torch could get a straw fading into purple into blue if you have good torch control, that would be very difficult if not impossible to do with an oven.

Unless your heat-colored parts are protected from wear- like a sunken screw head, the coloring is not durable at all.

I have no idea why this thread showed up as a new one.
