The self defense advantages of the Matriarch v. the Civilian are distinct if the two knives are compared. The Matriarch has a blade smaller than four inches, under the typical local law of 4" that allows it to be legally carried; the Civie is just over the legal limit at 4-1/8" official measurement. Both are able to be passed off as rescue knives (e.g. "Officer, I just got back from a whitewater trip and hadn't thought about putting my safety knife away..I'll do that as soon as possible"). The Matriarch was smaller and lighter than the Civilian and I'd like to see another one; that and a new Ayoob would make a devastating SD package when firearms or large knives aren't appropriate or are illegal.
That all being said, a blade size and shape like the normal one, and being fully serrated, would prove to be a good design. The blade could be H1, which seems (in my experience) to hold an edge longer when serrated, or in VG10; this way, the knife could be left in a glove box or duty belt without great worry of problematic or strength-hindering corrosion. It would be cool to see the ball lock incorporated into the design; a sort of mixture between the Dodo and the old Matriarch. The handles would be OK in FRN, but that would add the cost of molds and stainless steel liners would have to be added for maximum strength; G10 would be grippy and much like the Dodo, but the machining for that is costly; a run in peel ply carbon fiber would be awesome as well as light and grippy. I always wanted an old Matriarch and they are tough to find, much like the Massad Ayoob. This would be another cool addition to the line up.
