this thread is dedicated to the advancement in steel construction. how close are we to creating the ultimate alloy?

Depends on who you talk to,If the ultimate alloy could be made, what would it be used for?....I think it would be many years before it becomes available for knifemakers. And if it is made and is available, what would be the cost?.....remember vascowear?

I don't think the "ultimate" will ever happen. Everything is a compromise in one way or another.

But I could be wrong too...

see my tag line. Haven't found it yet.

Take an edge like carbon steel with as little work, but be corrosion resistant.

Hold an edge better than the uber steels.

Not a happening thing.

Still looking for a blade made of pure vorpal.

The future recedes as we advance. There will always be somewhere to go.

exactly.

If we are talking about Wolverine's steel claws which never need sharpening it will probably cost $1,000,000 (US currency) for the steel as a small slab. After being shaped into a knife it will cost $6,000,000 (6,000,035 with micarta handles:p). That is not even including future inflation.

We just need a diamond bladed knife with a little spring. Pure carbon and some complex man-made molecule should do the trick.

They've manufactured at least 3 substances that are harder than diamonds so far. I wonder if you could set them into titanium or something in a sort of micro-edge formation.

and an INFI grill to match?

Mixed with some of this:

Never goes dull, never rusts, never breaks, and will cut through anything?

light saber :)

That's the best part, you don't need to :) you could try but it might mess up your stones ;)
