How did you cut the tendons in your fingers?

I came across an archive post titled "How many people have cut tendons in their fingers??" by tuff.

I'm curious how exactly you managed to do this. One post mentioned a guy who got cut while shoving garbage down into a barrel (cat food can cut him). How exactly did you cut the tendons? knife fighting training mishap? just foolin' and it slipped? hunting/food prep accident?
 
I cut mine using a Spyderco Military to try and split a couple of frozen steaks. The knife popped the steaks apart and went through, hitting my pinky finger. The doctor that stitched me up said I missed the tendon, but since I couldn't move my finger for about 6 months I think he was mistaken. Thankfully I have full motion now, even if my pinky looks like it has a small hump now.
 
Sharpened my buddies knife for him, Lansky 20 degree angle with 1000 grit stone. Month or so passes, his dad asks him to cut some tv cable, so he makes a loop in his palm and cuts in a downward motion, slicing the cable clean and burying the knife in his palm near his pinkie. Still can't feel it or bend it all the way. At least he wasn't mad at me, realized he shoulda' known I'd make it sharp.
 
A glass coke bottle exploded in my hands after I shook it up at a party on my 16th birthday. It cut through the first joint on my left index finger, all the way to the bone, cutting the tendon and both nerves. That was almost 22 years ago. The feeling came back fine eventually, but the range of motion that that finger is maybe 75%.
 
A kid (20 something) at work stuck a pocket knife in a table a week ago and his hand slid down where he severed the tendons in his little finger. He is wearing a plastic form on his hand now while he heals from surgery to reconnect the tendons. That is just the most recent, I've worked around blades for a long time and I've see some doozies.
 
I was cutting a piece of hyfax ( its a plastic wear bar for a snowmobile track) with a brand new out of the box spyderco endrua. they told me the tendons and nerves would be fine now its 2 months later and im losing more feeling in my hand and other fingers. and it hurts all the time.

It's not hard at all! :)

I was ~16 years old, sharpening a hand made Leuku -knife, and was stupid enough to hold the stone down with my left hand. And then the knife just slipped. Cut into my left hand middle finger, between the knuckle and the middle joint. The tendon wasn't cut all the way, but it had a nice sort of eye-shape hole in it. The doctor said that whatever cut it, had to be really sharp, since he didn't have to clean the cut at all before stiching it. Needless to say, I was really proud (local anesthesia rules!).

Oh yeah, four stiches: two "melting" types on the tendon, two on the outside (which I removed myself with a leatherman later :D ). I still have a nice scar on that finger, shaped like ":grumpy:" this (the stiches left two white dots next to the scar).
 
It's never happend to me (thank God) but I do have three stories involving family.

My stepbrother was having arguement with his girlfriend over the phone while messing with his flea market butterfly knife. For what ever reason he decided to stab his dresser. Turned out to be not so good of an idea. His hand slid up the handle, on to the blade, severing the tendons of his pinky and ring fingers.

My stepdad works at a cabinet shop, and one day while feeding matterial through a saw it kicked back and cut off all his fingers on his right hand, save his pinky and thumb.

My brother was putting in windos at a house and was cutting twords hin self with a razor, sliped, and severd the tendon of his thumb.
 
I'll never forget the time my cousin, as a kid maybe 8 years old, was cutting brownies out of a pan with a fishing knife. He was cutting tip first in a stabbing sort of motion, but pulling toward himself and when the knife slipped, it plunged right into his abdomen. The scar is 6 inches long. No severed tendons, but I'd say he is lucky to have survived. Never cut without thinking about where your knife will go if it slips. In other words, always cut away from yourself and others.
 
I was cutting swiss cheese with a wide bladed, springy steel, butcher knife. Held the block of cheese in my left hand and tried to cut the cheese with the right hand. Knife slipped and went into my left hand index finger near the first joint. Got stitches. No feeling in the finger from the cut to the tip since then. :eek:
 
Cut my left forefinger to the bone with a power tool. Just missed the tendon by a hair. The *itch was having to scrub all that old automobile grime off my hands before driving to the emergency and having the ER guys do it all over again. Got seven sutures without the Novocaine that wasn't so bad (cut nerves). I now have about 90% movement, unable to fully close/make a fist.
 
Did something every school kid knows not to do. I was holding a small length of 2 X 4 in my left hand, and a chisel in my right, making a recess to hold a sharpening stone. You know the rest. The chisel slipped and sliced the tendons and nerves in my middle and ring finger on the left hand. Three surgeries and months of therapy later, both fingers work fine with a loss of some sensitvity.
 
I don't know if i cut the tendons or not, never saw a doctor, but I ran the knuckle of my left index down the length of a machete while trying to sharpen it when I was a dumb kid. It was a couple of years before I could fully bend the finger. I am a southpaw but my left hand is still only about half as strong as my right because of the one weak finger.
 
last year i was playing with my butterfly knife and i tried a trick and failed miserably. i cut my left middle finger knuckle down to the bone. how i missed my tendon, i do not know.

Wow, that accident with your step dad sounds pretty severe.
 
I had to drive my wife to the urgent care center Wednesday morning after she cut herself while trying to separate a piece of bread from a frozen loaf by stabbing a steak knife into the slit. I guess the bread popped free and the knife suddenly dropped into the thumb of her left hand. The cut was about a half inch (1 cm) from the tip of her thumb, so no tendon damage that is apparent. The cut went more than half way through, though. The bleeding didn't stop until they treated her about an hour after the incident. They put 5 stitches in it and she felt like crap for about a day and a half afterward.

Knives can be very dangerous, especially if you are not thinking about what you are doing.
