How do I send my knife for the Buck spa treatment?

I'm toying with the idea of sending my two dot 112 to Buck for the spa treatment that I've read about. I've read about the spa treatment in a number of posts, but they don't say how to do it. The only thing I can find on Buck's website is their sharpening service for $6.95. I was just wondering if they could buff out the tiny dents and scratches in the brass, and clean the blade up better than I can. Even though I have it plenty sharp with my sharpening kit, I wouldn't mind having a genuine Buck edge on it again. Does their sharpening service include cleaning up the rest of the knife? I'm not entirely sure what to do.
 
The sharpening service includes the clean up. Be sure to include in the form that you'd like the spa service. And anything in particular you'd like them to do, or anything not to do. In some cases folks have sent in knives with sentimental attachments and they've changed out parts or whatever. So just to be sure, I also request no parts be replaced or whatever if it's deemed unrepairable if it's an important knife to me, even in bad condition.

The last two I sent in, they really did a nice job on them. They sent them back with the amount noted what I needed to pay. Which I thought was nice. It may take a few weeks so be patient.

If you want your same knife back put that in your note... :D

Folding Knife ... Be sure to fold the blade in and ship it in a Sheath or wrap it up good ...
Fixed Blades... Ship it in a Sheath or made a Blade protector out of some cardboard...
Make it about a 1/2" or 1/4" longer than the blade for it doesn't poke through the box
and wrap it up good for it doesn't move around... :eek:

Thanks guys. I guess I don't have a real sentimental attachment to the knife, per se. I would, however, like it to keep the original parts. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be sure to include that in the note. The knife seems to be in good shape mechanically, so I can't really see getting any parts changed. Anything's possible, I guess. I've got a couple questions, though.

1. Does Buck actually use the term "spa service," or is it one of those things that if I say, will make me sound like a loon? :D I guess I'm wondering, if I use the term, will they know what I'm talking about?

2. The website says the cost is $6.95 for the sharpening service. Does the spa service cost more? I'm just curious what might make the price change.
 
Yes, you can tell them you want the "spa treatment". They will know what you are referring to. The cost for the sharpening will cover everything. The "spa treatment" basically get your knife tightened up it needed and every thing buffed up so it looks great. I think you'll be very pleased on how good they can make a well used knife look.
 
Does "spa" include replacing scales if needed?

I wouldn't think so. That's more involved than the normal "spa treatment" which usually gets your knife buffed up and sharpened. If you make note that the blade has some play they can and will tighten that up but replacing the scales would be something you need to discuss first with Buck.
 
Rather than start a new thread, I just thought I would post to this one.

I am still not sure if I should actually send it off. I guess part of the issue is a sort of separation anxiety so to speak. I'm a little worried it would get lost, or I would get the wrong knife back. But, the bigger thing that's kind of holding me back, is I had cleaned the knife up so much. I have polished the bolsters with Blue Magic, and it did a wonderful job. Since getting my Worksharp Guided Sharpening System, I have gotten a pretty good edge on it using the 17 degree angle guides. I started the knife a little farther down the guide to give it a slightly shallower angle to hopefully get the 13-16 degrees that Buck's website says. I don't know if my edge would rival a factory edge since I don't have a factory new vintage 112 with 440c steel. However, it's pretty dang sharp.

When I see the nicks in the brass, I do keep thinking it'd be nice to have them smoothed out. I guess if I were to send it, I'd hate to not have the factory edge put back on it.

I guess what I'm wondering is, has anyone ever sent a knife back to Buck that they had already sharpened, cleaned and polished? Did you have them put the factory edge back on?

a. you get the brass parts, blade and scales looking brand new at the risk of having to put 'your' edge back on it, or
b. maintain the 'battle wounds' and have your edge?

The point is, you may like the factory edge and the new feel if you send it in, but you won't ever know if you don't do it. At the cost of having to put your edge back on it, I think its worth the gamble if you really want the brass and blade cleaned up.

You can always include a note that you want only the frame work done and no sharpening and cross your fingers.

Yeah, you're right. I'm WAY overthinking this. I do that a lot. :o I really don't care about the edge I put on it. I'd have to do it again anyway, since I'd like it to be my main EDC knife. I love that vintage 112. After 40 +/- years, it's still built better than a lot of other knives.
 
I decided to send out the 112 today. It's on on its way home for the first time in about 40 years. I'm pretty eager to see what they can do with it.
 
Will do! I had taken some before photos, but I'm not sure how they turned out other than the LCD screen on my camera. I tried taking some macro type of shots, but it was pretty shiny already from the Blue Magic. I'm not sure how well the dings and scratches showed up. The post office said it should be there tomorrow.
