How do y'all get that textured/pitted look?

I've been wanting to try some new techniques on my knives to get that antique look. In particular the pitted/textured look on blades and/or brass guards. I've seen this done quite a bit. Not exactly sure how it's done, if it's hammered or done with an enchant? If you guys don't mind sharing your secrets with a newb, haha.

It depends on what texture you're referring to, but a texture such as Rick Marchand (knife maker and a Mod here) applies on many of his knives can be accomplished by the 'gun blue and bleach' method, which you can find some good threads on by using the BF custom search engine. Most others are achieved either by being left as forged or by using a texturing hammer.

Here is one example of a kiridashi from maybe 4 years ago that I had forged out in profile then just beat to death using a texturing hammer:

I simply took an old 2 pound sledge I had lying around and used a cut off disc in an angle grinder and cut some random cross hatch-type cuts in its face. I borrowed this technique from Murray Carter some years ago, but this is a bit more aggressive than the texturing he uses on his neck knives.

I thought this was an April fools post.

Gotcha, I figured you had clicked on the wrong thread and thought you were in the aluminum knife one lol

I know some guys frown upon faux forging textures if that's what you're referring to, but I took this as an honest question about texturing since I see it asked about often enough and applied even more. Perhaps this post just went over my head, though...? o_O

You get the texture by taking a larger bar then the knife your wanting and heating it up in a forge and using a hammer and your arm to shape the bar into the knife you want. The finish left by the scale and hammering is the finish your looking for.

Haha, not an April Fools. Just a newb wanting try some new techniques out to give some (fake) character to my blades. Wish I had the time and money to learn how to hand forge blades. At the moment I'm just scraping by on tools and limited time I have at my disposal.

Thanks for the pointers, Paul. I'll research the methods you mentioned. I do have a small sledge, a small gas forge, and could maybe find a section of train track for pounding on.
